𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗿𝗶𝗱: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗘𝗩 𝗙𝗹𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝗕𝗶-𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗼 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗘𝗩 𝗚𝗿𝗶𝗱 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 This recent article in the NY Times talks about bi-directional charging as a way to balance the grid when millions of #EV are in the US fleet (https://lnkd.in/ga8Qhc5q).  It also talks about General Motors and Ford Motor Company offering a #battery storage service for home charging.  What’s missing from the article is the research from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) that has already established the balancing the grid protocol for EVs on the West coast but also in some other states.  Our Affiliate representative Michael Kintner-Meyer from PNNL will present his recent analysis of this topic at our upcoming July 17th Propulsion Strategies for the 21st Century that will focus on the Future of EV Charging.  He recently completed work for the US Department of Energy on this topic, so we’ll get the most recent information about his research and how we may see charging playing out in the future.

I can’t recommend Edison Electric Institute’s 8th Annual Global Electrification Forum highly enough. I have been listening in to these sessions all week and they have been absolutely outstanding. Today holds the promise of another set of superbly-moderated sessions with a stellar lineup of speakers. Per EEI: “Today’s sessions will delve into diverse topics from enhancing Africa's electricity systems using GCC's interconnected grid model, to examining the resilience of essential services in an era of increasing disasters. Each discussion is poised to offer unique insights and actionable knowledge.” The moderator of the second panel of the day (9:10a-9:50a EDT “Ensuring/Insuring Essential Services in An Age of Disasters”) is David Owens and he is a truly extraordinary human being who I am blessed to know thanks to the University of Idaho’s Energy Executive Course and Energy Executive Summit. When he was EVP of EEI, David was tapped by President Obama to lead the recovery efforts following Superstorm Sandy in 2012. What David did and how he went about it was as unprecedented as the storm itself and earned him numerous industry accolades. In the wake of the near-total destruction of Puerto Rico’s power grid by Hurricane Maria in 2017, David served as the Chairman of the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority Transformation Advisory Council. It’s safe to safe that no one knows more about the topic of resiliency following natural disasters than David. Flip to page 25 to read all about the Prologis Mobility team’s progress in 2023, including 2 million miles of EV truck travel and charging 1/5 of all Class 8 EV trucks in California. I am so happy and fortunate to work at a company where sustainability is in our core DNA.   I’m especially excited to highlight our 2030 goal: achieving 900 MW of EV charging capacity across a portfolio of hubs, depots and workplace charging locations. Contextually, that big Denker project I shared last week had 9MW of EV charging capacity. In an op-ed on Bloomberg, Liam Denning cautions against overestimating the capabilities of current automated driving systems like #Tesla's, emphasizing the broader societal factors influencing road safety beyond technological advancements. While discussing promising technologies for detecting intoxication, Denning refers to #NeuroMonitor, a software package from Israeli #startup CorrActions that uses existing sensors in equipment such as the steering wheel to analyze ”micro muscle movements” in order to determine drivers’ level of cognition. Residual values of electric vehicles (EVs) are declining, which poses a significant challenge for EV adoption. This decline in residual values makes leasing EVs more expensive for automakers and consumers. The resale values of electric cars are generally much lower than those of their internal combustion engine counterparts, primarily due to rapid technological advancements, market dynamics, and higher initial purchase prices that do not translate well into the used car market. Interesting point that many worry about especially in the US on trips away from home. IMO - this is just one of several important factors hindering EV adoption. Per the article: The rising prices are bad enough for those of us who have an EV and are never, ever going back to gas. We pay them when we must, but it’s still better than the alternative. But, what about people who aren’t sold on an EV yet? Their point of reference isn’t going to be better stations at Pilot or cheaper stations elsewhere. Instead, the big question will be how these stations stack up against gasoline. Assuming $3/gallon gasoline (outside of California, obviously), the fuel cost per mile for the average American vehicle (25 MPG) is about 12 cents/mile. That’s what people driving across the middle of the United States are paying in their gas-powered machines today. A comparable EV gets in the ballpark of 3 miles/kWh. So, when prices are 64 cents/kWh, that’s a fuel cost of 21.3 cents/mile, almost double what a comparable gas car is paying to get down the road. To my friends with EV's - is this something that you see frequently - or is it an outlier since most charge up at home?

Another great step forward for Foresight Automotive (#nasdaq and #tase: FRSX), an MS-IR LLC client, announcing a follow-up software proof-of-concept (POC) agreement with a leading Japanese vehicle manufacturer. This follows the successful completion of two prior POC projects. Foresight's ScaleCam™, a 3D perception solution, will be evaluated for integration into the manufacturer's existing Level 2 and Level 3 ADAS systems. The project aims to enhance existing safety features and assess the feasibility of rapid software integration. A successful POC could lead to deeper collaboration, potentially resulting in the integration of Foresight's technology into the manufacturer's mass-produced vehicles. The development of solid-state batteries could be a game-changer in the EV industry. 🔋🚗 In a recent interview, my colleague Raphael Rettig estimated that these batteries could potentially slash charging times to less than 10 minutes. But there's a catch. Raphael also warns, "I don't believe that solid-state will become a major player in the volume electric vehicles segment before the middle of next decade." The reason? The significant safety risk posed by the need for these batteries to be packed tightly together. I wrote nearly a decade ago that to win with EVs the OEMs needed to build an ecosystem. It’s good these companies are finally taking EVs seriously, but if they want to catch and overtake Tesla public charging is only half the equation. To truly win this market these companies need to focus on solutions for EV charging at home.

https://lnkd.in/gF8AYpXh CNBC is looking at the reasons for the EV sales 'slow down,' vs hybrids market, but in most cases, they missed the role of limited supply and the impact of regulation. From what I said in the interview, they only mentioned my point about the role of plug-in hybrids post-2035. I would be happy to hear your thoughts on it.

🚗🚘⚡️🔋🪫Tesla's decision to disband its supercharger organization is unexpected. The supercharger has been pivotal in offering a holistic mobility solution: a vehicle, a power source, and software seamlessly navigating from point A to B. Unlike traditional manufacturers, Tesla's approach encompassed more than just the vehicle and repair stations. Removing charging makes their product less comprehensive and competitive, especially in new markets like Asia in my opinion. This situation underscores the critical role of policy timing and communication in consumer behaviour and market stability. Key Observations and Insights: - Financial Incentives and Consumer Behaviour: The halt in battery sales post-announcement shows how financial incentives drive consumer decisions, highlighting the need for well-structured incentives. - Solar Industry’s Vulnerability: The sharp sales decline underscores the solar industry’s vulnerability to sudden policy changes, emphasising the need for stable policies to ensure market stability. - Balancing Safety and Rapid Implementation: NSW’s focus on safety concerns requires balancing rapid incentive implementation with maintaining high safety standards.
