Using the power of robotics, WeCode KC collaborated with the Kansas City Royals, UMKC and KC STEM Alliance to bring tech careers closer to reality for underserved youth. WeCode KC was started in an effort to expose kids, teens and youth who are historically left out of the typical technology landscape to career pathways in technology, robotics, engineering and cybersecurity. Due to this program, marginalized youth can now see themselves in these careers. What an experience for this team of middle, high and college aged students! The Kansas City Royals challenged our robotics team with creating a robot to throw out the first pitch at a game at the Kauffman Stadium. So much work went into this project behind the scene, but we pulled it off! The Royals donated $5K to assist us with purchasing the equipment for the robot. Thanks to the partnership with UMKC and KC STEM Alliance, WeCode has an incredible location in the urban core of #kansascity to reach more black and brown students interested in technology. Besides the robot, the true MVP was Claude Hawkins, our IT Manager and Robotics Coach! He worked full time to manage this project, organized transporting the team of 10 students from various schools to WeCode 4 days a week after school and Saturdays. He worked with the UMKC engineering department to wrangle mechanical and electrical engineers to help the build and ensured the students learned JavaScript, Python, CAD and other concepts they learned during their FTC season, to kept this project moving. The team conceptualized on the design, and the requirements needed to create the robot. Our robotics team did it!!
