Between 2014 and 2020, more than 330 Black infants died in D.C. before their first birthdays. Recent perinatal reports show this problem isn’t going away anytime soon. City Paper is taking a closer look at why this crisis hits the Black community in D.C. so hard, how it affects families and clinicians, and who is working to prevent infant loss. This series is being produced as a project for the USC Center for Health Journalism’s 2023 National Fellowship. In the first installment of a three-part series, City Paper contributor Candace Y.A. Montague speaks with Wakeya Thompson-Belt and two other mothers who lost their infants and struggled to find answers and explanations. You can read Montague's full story at the link below.

Last week City Paper contributor Candace Y.A. Montague and therapist Jenn Ross-Moore connected with local women and families at the Mayor’s National Maternal & Infant Health Summit. In the session Healing for Black Families After Losing an Infant, the two discussed how those impacted by infant loss can lessen feelings of isolation, try to get answers, and share resources among other grieving families. If you were unable to attend the summit, or have more to say, you can still reach out to Montague at cmontague@washingtoncitypaper.com and (202) 650-6957, or through our survey: https://lnkd.in/eCuy3ZsW Between 2014 and 2020, more than 330 Black infants passed away in D.C. before their first birthday. What factors contribute to Black infant mortality rates in D.C.? When parents experience neonatal death or stillbirths, what kind of support do they need? What questions do they have? What existing programs or systems are in place to help? If you have a story to tell, we want to hear it. USC Center for Health Journalism #MaternalHealthDC

Washington City Paper contributor Candace Y.A. Montague wants to determine why the infant mortality rate is elevated in D.C. What factors contribute to these rates? And why do they remain elevated in certain wards? Montague will be at the Mayor's National Maternal & Infant Health Summit at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center on Tuesday, Sept. 19. There, she will be hosting the breakout session "Healing for Black Families After Losing an Infant" with therapist Jenn Ross-Moore from 3 to 4 p.m. If you have a story to share, consider joining Montague and Ross-Moore for their session this Tuesday.
