We're still buzzing from VA250's epic Fourth of July celebration at the Capitol last week! From the rousing statewide bell ceremony to the vibrant Square Fair, it was a day packed with fun. The Grand Ceremony topped it all off with inspiring speeches, moving performances, and a dazzling drone light show. VA250 united Virginians of all backgrounds to celebrate freedom under the fireworks. It was truly a night to remember! #OnThisDay 250 years ago, a meeting was called on Courthouse Green in Essex County to consider the threats to liberty posed by the British. The Essex Resolutions document left no doubt that theses Virginians were strongly committed towards what would eventually lead to revolution. This Saturday, the Essex County Museum & Historical Society will be commemorating this 250th anniversary with a special event that features live music and live entertainment. Thank you to all the people and places across Virginia that participated in our statewide bell tolling ceremony on July 4th. We heard freedom ring!

I am honored to be a member of the African American Advisory Council of VA250 Commission, chaired by the Honorable Virginia State Senator Mamie E. Locke. I enjoyed the event at the State Capitol the other night with my family, and was reminded of the fact that a more perfect union is not going to happen without all of us, and there is much work to be done. We must tell Virginia’s history as an explanation of America’s story in an honest and inclusive way, so that an authentic, shared joy might finally be revealed. We must reckon with the fact that our nation has not yet lived up the promise of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all, even as we celebrate the contributions, sacrifices and achievements that ALL of our ancestors have made along this journey. And we must redouble efforts to build a stronger foundation for this experiment we call America. ❤️ #VA #VirginiaIsForLovers #VA250 #Democracy
