Originally, the Dutch settled along the Hudson River in 1624 and called the area New Amsterdam, but in 1664, the English renamed it #NewYork, and the iconic name still remains today. One of the original thirteen colonies, a key player in the #AmericanRevolution, a melting pot of diverse cultures and landscapes, and a global hub of innovation and opportunity, New York's influence reaches far beyond the Manhattan skyline. Fun fact: did you know up to 40% of Americans can trace their roots back to the Ellis Island immigration station, located between New York and New Jersey? Happy statehood day to the Empire State!

On this day in 1897, Amelia Earhart, a legendary icon of aviation, was born in Atchison, Kansas. 🛩️ Earhart gained international fame for her record-breaking feats and advocacy for women in aviation. From her groundbreaking solo flight across the Atlantic in 1932, where she became the first woman to achieve such a feat, to attempting to fly around the world in 1937, her trailblazing career continues to inspire generations of women today. Leila Wright, a rising sophomore at SV was recently named a first-place awardee of “America’s Field Trip,” a new, nationwide scholastic contest encouraging students to reflect on what America means to them. Thousands of students from across the country submitted inspiring entries, responding to the prompt “What does America mean to you?” for the first-ever “America’s Field Trip” contest. A panel of current and former educators selected 150 students as awardees, hailing from 44 states and territories. First-place awardees will take part in unforgettable field trip experiences this summer at iconic American historical and cultural sites, and second-place awardees will receive $500 cash awards. “We’re thrilled to announce the first-ever ‘America’s Field Trip’ awardees – 75 incredible students from across the country who will now embark on transformative field trip experiences where they’ll experience history outside of the classroom," said America250 Chair, Rosie Rios. "‘America’s Field Trip’ will only get bigger, engaging thousands of students around our collective history and giving them a platform to actively participate in envisioning our future."
