About us

The Department of Defense (DoD) activated U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) April 16, 1987, at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida. DoD created the new unified command in response to congressional action in the Goldwater-Nichols Defense Reorganization Act of 1986 and the Nunn-Cohen Amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act of 1987. Congress mandated a new four-star command be activated to prepare Special Operations Forces (SOF) to carry out assigned missions and, if directed by the president or secretary of defense (SECDEF), to plan for and conduct special operations.

Retired, injured US Navy SEAL recovering through adaptive sports in the DoD Warrior Games “I love the Warrior Games. I get to be with fellow warriors and experience the camaraderie and it is like being on a team again,” Lt. Cmdr. (SEAL) Scott Terry said. The Department of Defense Warrior Games this year took place June 21-30, in Orlando, Florida featuring more than 200 wounded, ill, and injured active-duty and veteran service members competing in adaptive sports. The Naval Academy graduate would be in a coma for two and half months and had extensive injuries with long-term traumatic brain injury from a 2019 injury. He began his road to recovery, and he had to relearn how to walk and talk. His mother and caregiver Evelyn helped him to regain his confidence and his ability to move again. The DoD Warrior Games and the SOCOM Warrior Care Program- Care Coalition serve to enhance the recovery and rehabilitation of wounded warriors by providing them exposure to adaptive sports. Participation in the #WarriorGames represents the culmination of a service member’s involvement in an adaptive sports program and demonstrates the incredible potential of wounded warriors through competitive sports. On a given day, U.S. SOF are deployed to more than 85 countries, conducting operations, training, and joint exercises, and when combined with our partners, U.S. SOF’s reach extends to nearly every corner of the globe. U.S. Special Operations Forces take part in joint multilateral exercise in United Kingdom “It validated that as a collective U.S. joint force element we can train, fight and execute together effectively as a cohesive fighting force within U.S. Special Operations Command Europe,” said United States Air Force Col. Mark McGill, commander of the 352nd Special Operations Wing, RAF Mildenhall. “Whether it be air, maritime or land components used to counter Russian aggression, respond to crises, or evacuate citizens, this exercise has refined our ability to do so.” During the course of the two week exercise, SOF tested and trained one another on a myriad of skills necessary to respond in a crisis, such as close quarters-combat techniques, the use of extraction tools to respond and remove injured personnel trapped inside vehicles, and RAPIDS, a SOF tactic for quickly inserting and removing personnel into and out of an area. The Naval Small Craft Instruction and Technical Training School (NAVSCIATTS) recently graduated its Semester 24-2 Strategic Leaders International Course (SLIC) at the Bay-Waveland Yacht Club in Waveland, Miss. The current iteration featured senior military and government officials from Colombia, Central African Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Hungary, Iraq, Jamaica, Lebanon, Malawi, Mexico, Nigeria, Oman, Panama, Paraguay, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Thailand, and Uruguay. The ceremony featured remarks from Harry Thomas, a current senior fellow at Yale University's Jackson Institute for Global Affairs and former U.S. ambassador to Zimbabwe, the Philippines, and Bangladesh; and NAVSCIATTS' Cmdr. Robert LeClerc, who has spent the majority of his military career as a U.S. Navy SEAL. In remarks to the graduating officers and guests in attendance, LeClerc recognized the strategic leaders for the dedication and for the diverse experiences they brought to the month-long course. "Each of you bring unique perspectives and expertise to the table, enabling us to learn from one another and expand our collective knowledge base," he expressed. "By continuing to work together, we enhance the effectiveness of our global network of allies and partners, proving that we are stronger together." SLIC is an in-resident course designed to build partner capacity by offering senior military leaders and government officials of partner nations new perspectives, methodologies, and opportunities for thinking strategically and for designing strategies that successfully address complex challenges. Strategic leaders are introduced to methods and processes for design and systems thinking, and public interest communications, and receive instructions from professionals who currently use these methodologies and processes in the public and private sectors. During the course, the students apply the aforementioned methodologies in hands-on exercises in various case studies and in a capstone exercise designed against a current strategic challenge relevant to student countries. NAVSCIATTS is a security cooperation schoolhouse operating under U.S. Naval Special Warfare Command in support of foreign security assistance and geographic combatant commanders' theater security cooperation priorities. To date, almost 14,000 partner nation security force professionals from 127 allies and partners have trained with this historic command. #StrongerTogether #MaritimeSecurity #AlliesandPartners Naval Special Warfare Command - Navy SEAL & SWCC Teams United States Southern Command U.S. Northern Command U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) U.S. European Command U.S. Central Command U.S. Indo-Pacific Command
