Tiny particles in the air, often invisible to the naked eye, are playing a surprisingly big role in our weather! 🌧️ The U.S. Naval Research Lab (NRL) and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)'s Cloud, Aerosol and Monsoon Processes Philippines Experiment (CAMP2Ex) mission focuses on studying the role of aerosol particles, and the relationships between the particles with monsoon meteorology in the Philippines. By understanding how aerosols impact our climate system, we can better predict extreme weather events and develop strategies to protect our planet. Dr. Abbie Watnik is a shining star in the world of optics! ✨ As Branch Head of the Optical Physics Branch at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, she's exploring the fascinating world of digital holography and shaping the future of light. Her passion for science and the community is contagious. She shares, “Digital holography gives us access to the phase of light, and then we use that to shape and correct or understand how we use that for image correction, phase correction, etc.” Learn more about her work and insights here: https://lnkd.in/eq27-ek7 US Navy United States Department of Defense #optics #science #research #womeninscience #inspiration #WomeninSTEM #NavalSTEM #NRL #people #revolutionize #innovate #resiliency

#TechTuesday Remote-Controlled Pontoon Plane 🛩️ In 1924 NRL developed the control system for the first U.S. flight of a radio-controlled pilotless aircraft. Remotely controlled from the ground, the N-9 float plane took off from the Potomac River, followed a triangular course, executed glides and climbs, and landed on the river. “It’s our messaging, to make sure that everyone understands that we’re here to collaborate,” said U.S. Naval Research Laboratory Commanding Officer Capt. Jesse Black at the 2024 Combined Naval Event held in the United Kingdom. “Power and energy is like the root. We’re watching the power and technology change. Power and energy on ships has to match the technologies that are changing.” ⚓ US Navy United States Department of Defense United States Marine Corps Navy Leaders #power #energy #collaboration #solutions #science #tech #marines #sailors #defense #CNE2024 #CombinedNavalEvent #maritime #ships #research #dod #leaders #ally
"Ensuring Maritime Superiority: Insights from Captain Jesse Black on Advanced Naval Research" In an interview at the Combined Naval Event, Captain Jesse Black, Commanding Officer of the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, discusses the critical role of advanced, efficient, and stable power and energy systems in enhancing the United States' maritime security and warfighting capabilities. Captain Black elaborates on the Naval Research Laboratory’s unique position within the broader landscape of US research organisations and the importance of collaboration with industry and academia. He emphasises the need for continuous innovation in power and energy solutions to support the Navy’s evolving technological demands, highlighting efforts in areas such as alternative energy sources and energy management. The conversation also touches on the challenges of technology obsolescence and the importance of agile, open architectures in maintaining long-term technological relevance. Full Interview in the comments. Combined Naval Event 2025 is taking place in Farnborough, UK over 20 - 22 May 2025. #navy #defence #military #CNE2024 #CombinedNavalEvent #maritime #ships #research

#TechTuesday Unmanned Free Swimming Submersible (UFSS) #JustKeepSwimming In 1979 the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) created up a revolutionary submersible: the Unmanned Free Swimming Submersible (UFSS). This fish-shaped marvel was completely autonomous, obtained by an OMEGA navigator and preprogrammed command and control microcomputer. Thanks to this high-tech design, the UFSS could navigate around for 25 hours at 5 knots, which was attained with a low-drag hull and inexpensive battery energy source. A team of astronomers has found a new tool to discover pulsars, rapidly rotating neutron stars that blast out pulses of radiation at regular intervals ranging from seconds to milliseconds. Named the VLA Low-band Ionosphere and Transient Experiment (VLITE), the tool was made possible by a collaboration between the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. Using VLITE, researchers can continually monitor the sky at low radio frequencies by piggybacking VLITE observations on nearly all observations using the Very Large Array’s higher frequency receivers. #TechTuesday Low Frequency Broadband Sonar In 2011, the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory's (NRL) Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV)-based broadband active sonar system for the high-performance detection and identification of underwater mines was transitioned to production. The “squint capable” synthetic aperture sonar measures scattering cross-sections very precisely for identification based on structural acoustic features. The sonar is configured on a long-endurance, quiet AUV that navigates using a fusion of Doppler velocity measurement, fiberoptic gyroscope inertial navigation, and GPS. Deployment is anticipated on the Littoral Combat Ship and other platforms of opportunity. NRL is extending the technology to longer ranges and exploring the applicability to antisubmarine warfare.
