The most pressing problem in communications today: Photos are no longer proof of *anything*. Solutions proposed so far either do not work reliably or threaten to monopolise and close off the open Internet. Due to advancements in generative AI, photorealistic synthetic media content circulates the internet without context, placing the burden of proof on consumers to discern what to believe. Automated detection systems are failing. “Ministries of Truth” where one trusts a photo because an organisation says so are being proposed as a solution. We find either alternative unacceptable. If you are interested in influencing the way the world creates, shares, and ultimately trusts images and videos online, your input could be invaluable at the inaugural HOPrS workshop in Cambridge next week (March 15). Human Oriented Proof Standard (HOPrS) is an Internet-wide, decentralised, creator-centric and scalable standard designed to empower creators to prove the authenticity of their content. Simultaneously, it provides consumers with the tools to independently verify this authenticity for themselves. We believe any effort to prevent disinformation should avoid side effects like the potential monopolisation of Internet infrastructure, and HOPrS is an early exploration of how to balance this tension. We do not know if we have the answers but we would love to figure it out with you. A collaborative effort from OpenOrigins, TODAQ Labs and teams at Cambridge, HOPrS is still in its early phases of development, as we establish on our vision, technical specifications, scope and strategy. For our initial ideation workshop hosted in Cambridge, we extend an invitation to contributors and thought leaders, across academia and industry, to bring their expertise and help shape this standard with us.
