How can GCs navigate the challenges of the AI gold rush? There’s pressure to innovate — fast. There’s fear of lagging behind the competition. And your companies are finding the allure of vast customer data more enticing than ever. In her latest article, Danielle Sheer, Chief Legal and Trust Officer at global data protection company Commvault and Global Chair of The L Suite (TechGC), tackles the challenges of the AI data gold rush and the integral role GCs have to play in prioritizing trust. You can guide AI innovation thoughtfully by… ✔ Understanding & mitigating the risks  ✔Taking a proactive role (vs just sounding the alarm) ✔Steering boardroom conversations back to basics ✔Asking the questions no one else is taking time to ask  ✔Recognizing your colleagues’ priorities across the C-suite “The real casualties of this gold rush will be those companies that sacrifice sustainable, ethical practices for quick wins, only to face customer mistrust and regulatory backlash,” writes Sheer. “The true winners will be the ones who adopt AI thoughtfully, prioritizing what matters most: solving customer problems and earning trust and loyalty.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/gXNgAiYM #thelsuite #generalcounsel #clo #ai

We’ve seen tectonic shifts in tech and business over the last few years. Now… it’s time to step back for a pulse check: Do you think the old tricks are still working? That’s the question we’ll be tackling at this year’s invitation-only L Suite Executive Offsite. Hosted by co-chairs Eric Whitaker, CLO at 10x Genomics, and Stephanie Adamson King, CLO at Playco, and designed for the most experienced GCs and CLOs in our community, the 2024 Executive Offsite is focused on the theme “Rethink: New Frameworks for Old Challenges.” Seasoned GCs and CLOs from leading tech companies will come together for an action-packed three days at The 1 Hotel Toronto, September 23-25. To kick off this Offsite, event sponsor Cooley LLP is hosting scenic co-working at the 1 Hotel’s Rooftop Lounge! Attendees will have the opportunity to make new connections, catch up with old friends, or just catch up on their emails, all above the Toronto skyline. Shoutout to our event sponsors, Cooley LLP, Fenwick & West, Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP, and Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati. We’re excited to partner with you on this one-of-a-kind experience for tech's leading CLOs and GCs. I had a great time speaking with (and learning from) Brendan Mulligan and Praveer Melwani at the The L Suite (TechGC) First Time GC Virtual Forum. In particular, I really enjoyed hearing about their respective journeys, managing risks and the truth of the Game of Thrones-esque "Chaos is a Ladder" aspect to being a GC, namely that tough situations are often when GCs can really demonstrate clear thinking and grace under pressure, and really get recognized for adding tremendous value to the organization. https://lnkd.in/eEy6DGMj

I have always been puzzled that most people get no training, and there is very little guidance, for one of the most important parts of a senior lawyer's role - hiring. The blog below has some really useful insights - and not all are instinctive (at least not for me). And I can say this has been top of mind as the Symphony legal team has just completed the hiring process for 3 new joiners.

For GCs and CLOs at high-growth companies, finding the right talent to scale the legal team is frequently a top priority. But how do you create an effective interview process that helps you land the best candidates? In a guest post on The L Suite blog, Dina Segal, Chief Legal Officer at Gusto, shares winning strategies for an efficient and insightful interview process. Featuring insights from AnaLisa Valle, Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel at Sphero; Corinna Mitchell, General Counsel at Symphony; and additional top GCs from The L Suite community… The article lays out a few key strategies:  ✔️Involve the right people. Include a diverse mix of lawyers and non-lawyers who will work closely with the new hire. ✔️Ask behavioral-based questions. Focus on both legal expertise and essential soft skills. ✔️Tailor your questions. Review your questions to ensure they reflect the skills and responsibilities needed in the new hire. ✔️Assess leadership skills. If the role includes managing others, ask questions designed to understand their strengths as a people leader. ✔️Standardize your approach. Reduce bias by asking each candidate the same core set of questions. Tech IPOs appear to be making a comeback, and 2024 is shaping up to be a promising time for going public. Let’s say your company is exploring how to take advantage of this potential market – as GC or CLO, how can you prepare your team for success? The L Suite is here with answers, in our new Counsel Corner article authored by Peter Byrne, Partner at Cooley LLP, and David Peinsipp, Partner at Cooley LLP, featuring insights from Jonathan Truppman, Chief Legal Officer at ODDITY. The article explores… ✔️The state of the IPO market in 2024 and beyond (and the successful IPOs from high-profile tech companies that are signaling a thaw)  ✔️How to prepare for an open IPO window — which, as the pandemic taught us, can come and go in an instant  ✔️ A high-level overview of all the pieces that go into a public company readiness assessment The big takeaway? When in doubt, over-prepare. As Jonathan Truppman says, “You cannot be over-prepared enough — build as much buffer as you can in your timelines, ensure you have clear lines of communication across the syndicate and with outside third parties, and be ready to create strategic alternatives to pivot quickly to get a deal done.” Read more at the link >> https://lnkd.in/gb7hxNcr

I’m thrilled to announce that I’ll be joining the The L Suite (TechGC) Women’s Collective Dinner with Marie Ma, Laura Malinasky, and Ivoree Jordan to dive into one of my favorite topics: 👉 Leadership 👈 Being a leader isn't about making tough calls or having all the answers. It’s about learning - even if that means admitting you don’t know everything, (something I do often). As leaders within our projects, teams, and organizations we have a responsibility to attend to our own well-being and education by examining our ideas and remaining open to new ones. I do this by staying curious and seeking out new perspectives from the people around me. Interested in how others approach their own growth as a leader? Check out this brilliant HBR article on model leadership by Hitendra Wadhwa https://lnkd.in/dhQ4t9cM. It’s packed with wisdom and highlights values that resonate deeply with me: ▪ Purpose: Determine your noble cause ▪ Wisdom: Stay calm and receptive to truth ▪ Growth: Curiosity + a growth mindset  ▪ Love: Invest in relationships with those we work with ▪ Self-realization: Be centered and joyful All aspirational of course! Share your thoughts, ideas, stories, or a favorite resource about what makes a great strategic leader below ⬇ #theLsuite #TechGC #curiosity

My version of Oprah's "you get a car" is "I'll solve your problem!" You got a problem? I am here to help solve it! And your problem and your problem, too! This is partially born out of my genuine desire to fix. And partially born out of what can feel like an ethical obligation to do my very best to help my clients, no matter the circumstance. As a Solo GC, though, this approach quickly leads to some tension: 💡 How do you practice law at the level you ethically feel compelled to, at the level you expect yourself to, all while being stretched thin? 💡 I was excited to have been asked to moderate The L Suite (TechGC) panel on The Art of Professionalism: Navigating Ethical Conduct in Legal Practice today to have a conversation with Emelia Schinke and Katherine Kirkpatrick Bos today about this topic, among many more. I shared a key lesson that I have learned over the last two years: the ethical practice of law does not require that I know the answer to every question or that I help solve every problem. Instead, it requires that I continue to orient to the North Star of our profession--to promote justice--and that I help foster a culture of integrity, honesty and transparency. So in other words: solve your own damn problems, sales team. (JK JK JK, I love you and sorry for using you as click bait!)
