author of Mastering Community, Mastering Civility and co-author of The Cost of Bad Behavior; visiting professor at UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School
I was speaking with the CEO and President of a Canadian organization this week and she shared this call for civility: Dozens of former politicians, religious leaders, academics, artists, and human-rights advocates are calling on Canada’s political leaders to improve civility in public discourse and mend divisions that they say are undermining peace and security in the country. The open letter details issues that have contributed to a more aggressive, hostile, uncivil place for many people. There have been a number of responses and editorials that have followed. One response and idea I particularly like is that civility rests on all of us. We can't control how others behave. Our actions matter though. When I teach or speak, I always try to leave people with what I hope is an empowering message I wrote about in Mastering Civility. “Our behavior isn’t fixed, cast in stone. All of us, no matter how we’ve behaved in the past, can improve. If we care the least bit about ourselves, our work, and our organizations, we must improve. So don’t wait. Start today. Strive to listen more attentively. It’s the foundation of mastering civility, the pathway toward healthy, meaningful, lasting relationships. Acknowledge people. Say hello. Smile more. Look to include others, especially those who are forgotten or who are in need of our understanding and help. Practice e-civility. Give more—of yourself and your resources (smartly, of course). If it’s never too late to embrace civility, it’s never too early either… What are you doing today to connect with others? Are you lifting people up or holding them down? “ #civility #kindness #coaching #HR #leadership #positiveleadership Center for Positive Organizations https://lnkd.in/gDkcA5qE

"The Weave and the Void" This artwork explores the intricate interplay between unity and duality, where woven elements symbolise the convergence of diverse perspectives rooted in Sufi mysticism and coexistence. The two joined heads facing opposite directions reflect the multiplicity of viewpoints, while the vultures above signify the grip of oppressive forces, simultaneously guiding individual navigation towards a brighter future with compassion and contentment grounded in the spiritual and philosophical richness of Shaivite philosophy, Bharatha Muni's Natya Shastra, Sufi mysticism, and the cultural heritage of weaving. This piece embodies an optimistic vision for reclaiming our lost identity and reviving an inclusive culture. It is a testament to the potential of our region's historical and cultural legacy to illuminate a path towards inclusivity and renewal, overcoming the long-standing neglect and void experienced by our community.

Indigenous Latina Matriarch | Child-Adult Survivor Leader | Restorative Justice | Transformative Justice | Anti-Violence Anti-Racism Human Rights Advocate | Professional Life Coach | Mentor
One of the greatest words of encouragement I heard this year speaking in Washington DC and actually everytime I am a speaker is- “to see a #Latina in leadership speak is encouraging because we don’t see our people up there often”… Latina Professionals® Today we launch #hispanicheritage month 09/15-10/15. There is over 500+ ethnicities embodied within the #Latine Community! Our people have created and built and navigated #racism and #oppression for hundreds of years. Our people have been erased and excluded in history and in the present terms of #equity and #advocacy. We are the largest ethnic group yet called the sleeping giant. Our people have a lot of learning and unlearning to do. Our people have yet to come together likely due to scarcity and the conditioning of internalized oppression. The more we learn, unite and promote #racialreconciliation with #BIPOC people, the louder and stronger we will see similarities in our communities and experience true #intergenerational healing. To my brown people… NEVER check the white box. Do your homework of self discovery and genealogy. Learn about colonization and assimilation.. it’s still happening today! Learn about the advocates before us and around us. Dig deep and find your roots. Educate yourself and others (especially kids). We are natural born warrior healers, use your strength and power to unite, build and stand for equity and justice. Celebrate each other!! 🫶🏾 To our aspiring allies… learn to understand us. Don’t perpetuate erasure, exclusion and oppression. Choose to address your biases, power and privilege. Learn real history and join us to make new history. Be loud and proud of your language, skin, history, and future! #cultura #matriarch #healingjourney #indigenous #jefa #survivorleader #restorativejustice #transformativejustice Latina Professionals Magazine™ #repost Latino Leadership Institute

Robert Reich >> "...recovering our common good depends on several things: It depends on establishing a new ethic of leadership based on trusteeship. Leaders must be judged not by whether they score a “win” for their side, but whether they strengthen democratic institutions and increase public trust. It depends on honoring those who have invested in the common good, and holding accountable those who have exploited it for their own selfish ends. It requires that we understand — and educate our children about — what we owe one another as members of the same society. Instead of focusing solely on the rights of citizenship, we need also to focus on the duties of citizenship. And it requires a renewed commitment to truth.
A final word about the common good

True reconciliation involves listening to and elevating Indigenous voices, allowing them to tell their own stories and truths. It's not just about creating spaces but also about who leads the narrative within them. The history of our people is complex and intertwined with layers that cannot be erased, only acknowledged and learned from. At the Indigenous Gathering Place Society, we stand for a future where Indigenous leadership is at the forefront of conversations about their own history and culture. Let's work together to ensure that the paths we tread are respectful, truthful, and inclusive, giving space and voice to those who can guide us toward genuine understanding and reconciliation. Join us in supporting the creation of The Indigenous Gathering Place, an initiative led by and for Indigenous communities. Because when we make room for true voices to be heard, the journey towards reconciliation becomes more honest and impactful. #IndigenousLeadership #TruthTelling #Reconciliation #CulturalHeritage #NothingAboutUsWithoutUs

Online psychotherapist CRP-02/07360, speaker and author specialized in well-being. Helping adults find balance amidst life's chaos.
Let's remember intergenerational respect: It plays a crucial role in the harmony of our society. This respect reflects how we value the wisdom, experience and perspectives of all generations and how we allow these values to inform our collective decisions and behaviors. A society that encourages intergenerational respect is a society where young and old can learn from each other in an environment of empathy and understanding. This allows young people to take advantage of the experience of their elders, while giving older people the opportunity to feel valued and engaged. Furthermore, intergenerational respect can help create more united and resilient communities, prepared to face social and environmental challenges in a collective and informed way. Would you like an example of how this can be implemented in local communities?

De Facto Anarchism 🏴 While these practices do not stem from anarchist ideology, they result in a form of de facto anarchism where: Decentralized Decision-Making: 🌐 Decisions are made at the local level, often through consensus or traditional forms of leadership, rather 1/2 than top-down mandates. Voluntary Cooperation: 🤝 People cooperate voluntarily based on social ties and mutual benefit, rather than coercion by the state. Self-Regulation: 📜 Communities develop their own rules and norms to regulate behavior and resolve disputes. 2/2
