Today the Endowments announced $9.3 million in grants to 35 organizations whose work focuses on confronting #ClimateChange, reducing adverse environment-related health effects & improving equitable access to healthy food in the SW PA region. “The toxic air, water & land pollution inherited from the past, as well as that from present-day industry, affect not only those near the sites who are often the least equipped to avoid the resulting adverse health effects, but also our region’s ability to prepare for the vibrant & inclusive economy of the future,” said Endowments President Chris DeCardy. As a lead researcher on a major Endowments-funded study about significant health improvements after the closure of the Shenango Coke Works, NYU’s Dr. George Thurston continues the positive effect he has on the lives of real people. Read the note he received from one grateful citizen:
People ask me why, in my 70's, I haven't retired yet. A big factor is wonderful feedback from the community groups I interact with, like the note I received from this group in Pittsburgh, PA who live around a coal plant that my research evaluated, documenting their lived experience that eliminating the coal air pollution improved their health. Working with community and public interest groups is VERY gratifying. Try it!
