Providing Quality Resident Education in the Rio Grande Valley: South Texas Health System GME Consortium Family Medicine residents recently ventured to the Texas A&M University Higher Education Center at McAllen campus as part of their two-week orientation program. Residents participated in a professional workshop – led by Dr. Heidi Pareja, Program Director for the consortium's Family Medicine Residency Program – that offered an overview of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requirements for Family Medicine graduates. Through accreditation, innovations and initiatives, the ACGME strives to ensure that residents and fellows train in educational environments that support patient safety, resident and fellow education and physician well-being. In partnership with the Texas A&M University School of Medicine, the STHS GME Consortium will offer residents the opportunity to rotate through various specialties to gain exposure to diverse patient populations and medical conditions. Two campuses, one team! ✌️🔧💡 This spring, multidisciplinary engineering students at Texas A&M and the Texas A&M Higher Education Center at McAllen came together to design a portable device to enhance material testing techniques. Interdisciplinary (ITDE) and multidisciplinary engineering technology (MXET) students collaborated on the same Capstone Design team for the first time, showcasing their talents and innovative skills. College Station students Canaan Carman and Austin Moses said the Versatile Testing Bench could enhance engineering students’ educational experience at both facilities. “When I took my Solid Mechanics class, we didn't have any sort of device like this. Our latest article highlights Texas A&M School of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences student and volunteer firefighter, Andres Garza ’26 taking his project beyond the classroom. Andy’s research on the cancer and health risks among firefighters was the winning presentation at the 4th Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE) Symposium. He took it a step further by sharing his research with the City of Alamo and the Alamo Fire Department.

Texas A&M School of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences student and volunteer Alamo firefighter, Andres “Andy” Garza, Jr. ’26 visited the City of Alamo to give his first-place CURE Symposium presentation to city officials, firefighters, and community members. He provided details on the cancer and health risks firefighters face in their line of work and preventative measures to take. Andy is a great example of Aggies using what they learn to make a difference in their community. Whoop!

Paloma L. '24 graduated last week and is well on her way to becoming the first woman among four generations of engineers. Whoop!
