What if we could grow food on other planets? 🌱 Emmanuel Mendoza, an aerospace engineering student at Texas A&M, started exploring this in high school by growing radishes in simulated Martian soil. Now, with NASA's support, he's experimenting with pea plants and black soldier fly larvae to find sustainable ways to grow food in space. How does cell shape affect protein transport? Researchers at Sanford Research and Texas A&M found that cell shape changes impact protein transport rates by altering guanosine triphosphate (GTP) levels, not nuclear pore size, as previously thought. Published in the Journal of Cell Biology, the study shows that cell spreading slows transport while cell rounding speeds it up. This discovery links cell shape to gene expression and protein synthesis, with potential implications for diseases like cancer. The human circulatory system is adapted to Earth's gravity, but in microgravity, blood shifts upward, causing changes in the cardiovascular system. To study these effects on the moon, "Aggie Echo," a team of seniors from @tamubmen, is creating a @NASA sponsored wearable ultrasound collar to document blood flow. Their design, which earned top honors in the Texas Space Grant Consortium Design Competition, is easy to use and takes high-quality readings.
