"Disinformation is on the minds of government leaders in the U.S. with the upcoming 2024 presidential elections. Media organizations are also focused on disinformation — particularly combating the spread. Scripps News has launched the disinformation desk, which is focused on exposing disinformation and how it spreads — not just in politics but also in news." https://lnkd.in/gqD_gH9g

About us
The Society of Professional Journalists is dedicated to the perpetuation of a free press as the cornerstone of our nation and our liberty. To ensure that the concept of self-government outlined by the U.S. Constitution remains a reality into future centuries, the American people must be well informed in order to make decisions regarding their lives, and their local and national communities. It is the role of journalists to provide this information in an accurate, comprehensive, timely and understandable manner. It is the mission of the Society of Professional Journalists: — To promote this flow of information. — To maintain constant vigilance in protection of the First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech and of the press. — To stimulate high standards and ethical behavior in the practice of journalism. — To foster excellence among journalists. — To inspire successive generations of talented individuals to become dedicated journalists. — To encourage diversity in journalism. — To be the pre-eminent, broad-based membership organization for journalists. — To encourage a climate in which journalism can be practiced freely.

The Society of Professional Journalists strongly condemns the conviction and 16-year sentence of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich imposed by a Russian court. “Evan Gershkovich in no way, shape, or form received any semblance of a fair and free trial. This conviction and 16-year sentence are unjust, shameful and sets a dangerous precedent for journalists working abroad. Journalism is not a crime, and Evan was simply doing his job as a journalist,” said SPJ National President Ashanti Blaize-Hopkins. The Society of Professional Journalists stands with Selina Cheng, the new chair of Hong Kong's leading media professional group who was fired from the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday. “The firing of Cheng sends a chilling message to all those attempting to resist encroachments on press freedom in Hong Kong. This move is especially unfortunate at a time when press freedom advocates in the United States and elsewhere are fighting to help Cheng's fellow WSJ reporter Evan Gershkovich withstand his unjust imprisonment in Russia and regain his freedom,” said SPJ National President Ashanti Blaize-Hopkins. "Journalism ethics courses use the Time cover as an example of what not to do, and journalism organizations seize on every breach to stress to journalists and the public that images, both those with and without motion, should not be manipulated in news coverage. Journalism ethics experts suggest that manipulated news photos deceive the public and add to the rampant misinformation that defines today’s information ecosystem. Yet, it keeps happening." https://lnkd.in/gwXsVQj2

"But the widespread criticism suggests a clash between the enduring impact of the fleeting, first-draft reporting and the impatience of some readers, who assumed journalists had missed or purposely misreported a story that had evolved since it had published. You can blame social media for that. Tweets and other posts can circulate prominently for hours or days — even after they have been rendered obsolete by fresher developments." https://lnkd.in/gRR5DYiZ
