#ThrowbackThursday: “Welcome to my house! Enter freely. Go safely, and leave something of the happiness you bring!”   According to Bram Stoker’s Dracula, we welcomed the SEAMLESS family last week for the third General Assembly meeting in #Duisburg. With the important and fruitful discussions around the #SEAMLESS project and its various work streams, several demonstrations of various DST research facilities and results, and an intriguing social program including a cruise dinner in the port of Duisburg and on the Rhine, it was truly a memorable and highly productive meeting. Despite (or maybe exactly because of) a packed agenda, we have - discovered the North Star, - scripted movies (several ones) and the project shanty (just one for the time being), - emptied some bottles (not what you think!), - deciphered hieroglyphs (or something alike), - worked on bright visions (figuratively), brown sheets and colored cards (literally), - played with robots (some successfully, some less so), and - saw numerous inland vessels (of course!) – small and big ones, automated, remotely operated, and manually steered ones. We have even optimized the logistics of Santa Clause! Moreover, we have discovered hidden talents for steering inland vessels, modeling for close-up shots, finding your way through a labyrinth disguised as a meeting venue, singing self-penned hits (!!), and educational evening entertainment.   Dear SEAMLESS Project members, we would like to express our gratitude to each and every one of you for your visit and your contribution to the #SEAMLESS project meeting! Autonomous ships, equipped with cutting-edge systems capable of making decisions independently, promise remarkable fuel and crew efficiencies. The Autoship H2020 project, led by Marco Molica Colella from CiaoTech - Gruppo PNO – PNO Group, has successfully demonstrated these innovations on two vessels, achieving key milestones towards #zeroemission #shipping. With comprehensive digital upgrades and successful pilots in short sea shipping and inland waterways, Autoship H2020 paved the way for a greener maritime future. Moving forward from the project’s achievements, next steps will include further refining autonomous shipping innovations, and increasing their application within the #maritime industry. To achieve this, new projects have been launched to build on Autoship H2020’s successes. One such EU-funded project, called SEAMLESS Project, will focus on enhancing autonomous shipping technologies such as remote control. Another EU-funded project, called ReNEW, will introduce an innovative autonomous barge, the ZULU X-barge, to demonstrate resilient inland water transport through digitisation. The SEAMLESS Project consortium gathered at DST - Development Centre for Ship Technology and Transport Systems in Duisburg for the third consortium meeting. We had two days of fruitful discussions, idea exchanges, and comparisons of the results achieved by the consortium to revolutionize the Short Sea Shipping and Inland Waterway Transport domains. This meeting in Duisburg allowed us to delve into the work that the DST - Development Centre for Ship Technology and Transport Systems Team is performing within the project. This included evaluating the demonstration and transferability cases and engaging in redesigning logistics processes and systems architecture, as well as the planning and implementation of the #IWT demo case and the development of the automated mooring system. But it wasn't all work! DST well represented in the Smart Shipping Conference in Flanders   Upon invitation of the Flemish Ministry of Mobility and Public Works (Departement Mobiliteit en Openbare Werken), DST has attended the #SmartShippingConference in Antwerp yesterday which was held under the motto “Towards a single market for Smart Shipping”. Onboard the Blue Rhapsody, a conference vessel berthed in front of the iconic Havenhuis Antwerpen and later cruising the port area of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, the hand-picked participants attended an interesting program encompassing the views of both practitioners (from vessel operation, technology provision, and port and terminal business) and policy-making and regulatory bodies have been presented, elaborated, and discussed. Moreover, a live demo of the Seafar technology on the inland vessel River Drone 2 (operated by Naval Inland Navigation) was presented in the port basin in Antwerp. DST - Entwicklungszentrum für Schiffstechnik und Transportsysteme e. V. was well represented at the event as the projects NOVIMOVE - smart & sustainable waterways, SEAMLESS Project and AUTOFLEX HEU Project have been presented on site and these and other projects like #FernBin and Innovation Action SYNERGETICS have been mentioned and referred to by the presenters and panelists. In addition, Cyril Alias from DST’s logistics and transportation department attended the event in person, represented the AUTOFLEX HEU Project on site, and reunited with a plethora of DST’s Belgian and international network partners. The AUTOFLEX project examines the potential of small, automated, zero-emission inland vessels for new logistics service concepts with tailored business models and will demonstrate the results in dedicated events for the public.
