The Roosevelt Institute champions bold policy reforms that would redefine the American economy and our democracy.
About us
The Roosevelt Institute, a New York-based think tank, promotes bold policy reforms that would redefine the American economy and our democracy. With a focus on curbing corporate power and reclaiming public power, Roosevelt is helping people understand that the economy is shaped by choices—via institutions and the rules that structure markets—while also exploring the economics of race and gender and the changing 21st-century economy. Roosevelt is armed with a transformative vision for the future, working to move the country toward a new economic and political system: one built by many for the good of all. We bring together thousands of thinkers and doers—from a new generation of leaders in every state to Nobel laureate economists working to redefine the rules that guide our social and economic realities. We rethink and reshape everything from local policy to federal legislation, orienting toward a new economic and political system: one built by many for the good of all.

Recently, columnist Matthew Yglesias argued that using workforce rhetoric to support #childcare policy no longer holds water for a variety of reasons, but Elliot Haspel thinks there's a larger framing issue when we talk about child care as a commercial good versus a national value. How do we sustain innovation in the economy? 💲 Traditional wisdom says incentivizing firms to innovate is all it takes. 🧠 But just as important—and often overlooked in competition policy—is fostering the ability of firms to innovate. Reparations for Black Americans must include: 💲 Cash payments 🧠 Psychological reparations As Riana Elyse Anderson, Ph.D., LCP (assistant professor, University of Michigan School of Public Health) explains in her contribution to our series in The American Prospect, mending our ongoing history of racialized harm must be part of a vision of the #GoodLife marked by equality, fairness & justice: https://lnkd.in/guhMuP7c

NEW 📃: Innovation has been for too long used as a shield against antitrust scrutiny. Correcting this requires a new paradigm of how we understand innovation. Rather than the simplistic view that innovation stems only from incentives, our new brief shows how innovation emerges from sharing knowledge and resources among a variety of actors. An innovative economy then requires robust antitrust enforcement to ensure fair competition, in particular in the emerging AI space. Structural racism is a design feature, not a flaw, of our tax code. 📗 We were fortunate to be in a position to buy our house 14 years ago. Our neighborhood was formerly under a racial covenant and #Oakland was part of federally-backed #redlining scheme that denied many families of color the opportunity to become homeowners in our area. Today, many black families remain ineligible for the mortgage interest deduction that made homeownership affordable for us because of these systemic barriers. The estate tax, the 529 college saving expansion, pass-through business deductions from the Trump Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (#TCJA), and the decimation of the #ChildTaxCredit are all manipulations of our tax code that disproportionately harm black families. These injustices can be remedied by: 💡 Implementing wealth taxes to redistribute resources more equitably. 💡 Closing tax loopholes that allow large corporations to evade fair contributions. 💡 Investing in public options (schools, libraries, health care, etc) that benefit all communities. Brilliant analysis by Beverly Moran and Roosevelt Institute if you're interested in learning more. #RacialEquity #TaxJustice
