Walmart recently announced the construction of a new high-tech perishable distribution center in Pilesgrove. The 700,000-square-foot facility will begin operations in 2027, bringing approximately 400 local jobs to the region. This will be the fifth high-tech PDC for the company and part of a broader grocery network transformation the retail and grocery giant has invested in, from data, intelligent software and automation — all to transform the business and create a more connected supply chain. Walmart said adding the state-of-the-art tech to its facilities enable greater speed and capacity that allows it to serve customers even more reliably. For example, these high-tech DCs can store double the number of cases and process more than twice the volume of a traditional perishable DC, more than doubling the number of cases processed per hour. When more than 700 kids got a chance to run onto the field at MetLife Stadium on Wednesday for a youth soccer clinic, there was hardly a fan in the stands. To be sure, it was a stark contrast from the more than 80,000 who watched Lionel Messi and Argentina defeat Canada in a Copa America semifinal on that same field the night before. The excitement level, however, was just as high. While the three recent Copa America games at MetLife showcased the draw of international soccer, the clinics led by the U.S. Soccer Foundation and the 2026 FIFA World Cup Host Committee of New York/New Jersey, showed its reach. And it showed the depth that the host committee and all involved are working to develop. Simply put, the impact of the World Cup in this area needs to be about more than the eight matches that will be played in New Jersey and the six that will be played in Philadelphia, said Lauren LaRusso and Bruce Revman, the co-managers of the host committee. There’s plenty about the #nonprofitcommunity that most people don’t know. - The community is much bigger than you think (40,000 organizations account for 10% of the workforce and $50 billion in spend); - Nonprofits are a business (they need to balance the books like everyone else); - And nonprofits battle government rules and regulations (read: seemingly unnecessary bureaucracy) as much as anyone. There may be good news coming on the third issue. New legislation aimed at tackling decades-old problems with the government grants and contracting processes for nonprofit organizations has been introduced by Assemblywoman Yvonne Lopez (D-Perth Amboy). The two-bill package (A4692 and A4695) would implement a series of reforms to the processes that nonprofits undergo when they apply for or receive state government funds and would establish an ombudsperson to field inquiries and provide assistance to nonprofits that are experiencing problems. Lopez said the reforms are necessary. “As a former grantmaker and nonprofit executive, I know firsthand the challenges that our nonprofit partners face in contracting with the state and accessing state dollars,” she said.
