Celebrating Success! Congratulations to the Roanoke City Public Schools for Start on Success (SOS) cohort 2023-2024! From day one, I’ve witnessed the incredible growth of this program and its positive impact on students. The end-of-year ceremony was a testament to their hard work and dedication. Special thanks to Carilion Clinic and Carter Machinery for providing valuable internships to these talented students. Thank you to the partners who helped make this program successful: Virginia Department of Education, Virginia Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services (DARS) and the Center on Transition Innovations at VCU. #RCPS #VDOE #EducationMatters #DARS #CTI

Please join us in congratulating the following individuals for being appointed during Tuesday night's School Board meeting! • Dr. Cyndi Williams, Chief Academics and Accountability Officer • Archie Freeman, Chief Instructional and Administrative Officer • Dr. Lori Wimbush, Assistant Superintendent of Instruction and School Improvement • Dr. Nick Pontius, Executive Director of Special Education and Exceptional Learners • Dr. Jonathan Schulz, Executive Director of Division Accountability and Strategic Initiatives • Dr. Wendy Durham, Executive Director of Literacy, Academics, and School Improvement • Claire Mitzel, Director of Communications & Public Relations These positions are the result of a reorganization that will ensure literacy is a top priority within Roanoke City Public Schools. As scheduled, during the 2024-2025 school year, RCPS will also conduct a review of the Strategic Plan and adjust as needed. The reorganization and the Strategic Plan review will ensure that RCPS is aligned with the Virginia Literacy Act and the Virginia Department of Education’s anticipated updates to accreditation and accountability standards. This is a true reorganization; the majority of the positions do not require additional funding and will enable RCPS to have an increased focus both on literacy and student accountability and discipline. This was a competitive process, totaling more than 170 applicants with 82 interviews. As Dr. White stated last night, this is a testament to the culture in Roanoke City Public Schools and our recognition as one of the region’s top employers. If you are interested in joining RCPS, we encourage you to apply: www.rcps.info/apply.

Congratulations to 12 deserving seniors who recently received scholarships from the RCPS Career & Technical Education Foundation at the annual CTE Extravaganza! Families, sponsors, and community partners were also able to tour DAYTEC and learn more about the innovative career pathways offered. In addition, the Greater Roanoke Workforce Development Board presented the foundation with $100,000 to support electrical upgrades to the precision machining program at ROTEC! #WeAreOne It's thanks to our many supporters and partners that nearly $30,000 has been raised during this year's Extravaganza. 100% of funds raised go directly toward students through scholarships and enhanced programming. Donate today to help the Foundation meet its goal! https://lnkd.in/eK4vTgTq A special thank you to the following sponsors for their support: Branch Construction & Hopkins | Lacy, Carilion Clinic, Integer Holdings Corporation, Plumbers Steamfitters Local 10, Magic City Auto Group, Wabtec Corporation, and Virginia Western Community College.

Last week, City of Roanoke, VA held a special dedication ceremony for the Crystal Spring eBranch, which now features artwork made by our very own Crystal Spring Elementary School Art Club! Students, with the support of art teacher Chris Jones, brought their vision of Roanoke to life through this special project in partnership with the Roanoke Arts Commission and Roanoke Public Libraries. This is another example of how our entire community benefits when we all work together! #WeAreOne #RCPSProud

As we approach the end of the school year, our Operations team is gearing up for many projects that will start and continue over the summer. This includes the installation of solar panels at the William B. Robertson Central Administration Building. Superintendent Verletta White, Ed.D. checked out the progress last week during a tour with Chief Operations Officer Chris Perkins and Capital Projects Manager Greg Burgess. Solar panels will also be installed this summer at John P. Fishwick, Lucy Addison, and James Breckinridge Middle Schools and Fishburn Park Elementary School. This part of an ongoing project in partnership with Secure Solar Futures that will provide seven locations throughout the division with on-site solar power for the next 25 years. Solar panels have already been installed at Fallon Park Elementary and the Charles W. Day Technical Education Center.
