The UK's newly appointed Chancellor, Rachel Reeves declared growth the "national mission," with a strong focus on housing, planning, and infrastructure. RICS is thrilled to see the built environment at the heart of this mission. Labour aims for 1.5M homes in five years, needing 300K annually—a challenging but achievable goal. RICS supports housing targets, planning reforms, and investment in our electrical grid. We're ready to help the government meet these ambitious targets and build a sustainable future for our nation. Hear from our CEO, Justin Young, who was interviewed on Bloomberg this morning discussing what Labour's majority could deliver for UK housing and infrastructure.
This morning I sat down with Bloomberg’s Kriti Gupta and Guy Johnson to discuss what a Labour landslide means for the housing and construction markets. What today’s result delivers is certainty, which is a key ingredient for a well-functioning built environment. From new towns and a 1.5 million news home target, to planning reforms and changes to laws that govern the PRS market, Labour’s campaign pledges have been plentiful. Now it is up to Keir Starmer's to translate these promises into sound, meaningful policies that ensure changes happen quickly and efficiently. Looking ahead, Labour is expected to make major housing announcements within the next fortnight. RICS looks forward to working with Labour’s different policy units to deliver changes that will ensure economic growth, sustainable solutions to the housing crisis, and tackle construction’s acute skills shortage. Watch my interview below.

📣 Labour wins UK Election, what's next for RICS? Congratulations to the new Prime Minister of the UK Sir Keir Starmer. We look forward to working with the new government to improve the UK's built and natural environment. The promises made over the past five weeks can be turned into policies focusing on: 🏘 Creating a Secretary of State position dedicated solely to housing 📜 Establishing crucial planning reforms at the local level 🏙 Undertaking a land review to identify the "grey belt" and opportunities for its development 📚 Establishing a Built Environment GCSE to help close the skills gap and inspire the next generation. Enacting these policies is crucial if the government is to meet its ambitious 1.5 million homes target. Read RICS' response to the election result 👇 https://lnkd.in/e7sj9vv7
