Project 2025, proposes significant changes to the federal government and its workforce. I recently spoke with WAMU 88.5’s Natalie Yuravlivker about how these proposed changes could affect the D.C. region, home to many federal employees. One key aspect of Project 2025 is the call to reinstate Schedule F, which would strip certain government positions of civil service protections and potentially replace them with political appointees. This approach would dismantle a 150-year tradition of hiring based on merit and expertise, potentially leading us back to a "spoils" system. Another aspect of the proposal is relocating 100,000 federal jobs out of the D.C. area. Although 80% of federal positions are already outside D.C., this raises important questions about the role of remote work and the value of keeping government leadership centralized. The rhetoric around "draining the swamp" can be damaging to the morale of federal employees and public trust in government. At the Partnership for Public Service, we believe in pursuing meaningful reforms that enhance accountability and modernize our government, rather than abandoning it. As we navigate these discussions, let's stay focused on solutions that strengthen our public institutions and encourage civic engagement.
