Partners for a New Economy
Non-profit Organizations
Our economy redesigned for nature and all people to flourish
About us
Partners for a New Economy is an international philanthropic fund focused on transforming our economy for nature and all people to flourish. We were founded in 2015 by the MAVA, Oak, Marisla and KR Foundations, to address the root causes of environmental degradation that lie within our economic system. In 2020, we were joined by Laudes and Ford Foundations, by Omidyar Network in 2022. The initiatives we fund show a deep understanding of planetary boundaries and an urgency to transform our economy to live within them. They push the frontiers of alternative economic thinking and work to change the rules, goals and mindsets underpinning our current economic system.

It's great to see that Ursula von der Leyen will appoint an EU Commissioner with responsibility for #IntergenerationalFairness, and even more important that our partners like ZOE Institute for Future-fit Economies are continuing to make the case for embedding intergenerational fairness meaningfully in decision-making. Expanding how we think about time horizons feels crucial if we're going to redefine what is valued within our economic systems. Sir Geoff Mulgan and Robyn Bennett's recent paper (link in comments) is a great place to start if you're interested in this agenda. It reviews the institutions, laws and methods that can help us better reflect the interests of future generations in today’s decisions, including 'the many steps that are being taken around the world through laws, institutions and new approaches to finance – and suggests options for the future.' Our colleague Cassie Robinson will be attending the UN Summit of the future in September (link in comments) meeting people, and convening funders, who are focused on new institution-building and policy work related to future generations. If you're attending and are working on this agenda, let her know!
📢 Ursula von der Leyen wants to appoint a Commissioner with responsibilities for ‘intergenerational fairness’ In her speech to the European Parliament this morning, ahead of the vote later today on the #EUTopJobs, she proposed the Commissioner to lead work, "to ensure decisions taken today do not harm #FutureGenerations and there is increased #solidarity between people of different ages". Long-term thinking is critical not only for young people, but also for competitiveness, democracy, social and economic resilience, and the green and digital transition.

Ursula von der Leyen and Roberta Metsola have been re-elected as the President of the European Commission and President of the European Parliament respectively during the inaugural plenary session of the European Parliament. Elected with a larger majority than in 2019, von der Leyen's guidelines for the new commission show a balancing act with a clear focus on competitiveness and security, but also priorities related to democracy, rule of law and fundamental rights as well as green and social issues. Implementation of existing policy is also placed at the forefront. Read the full story here! https://bit.ly/46dqyV4

We're still digesting all the brilliant content and connections made at the International Association for Feminist Economics (IAFFE) conference in Rome, held at the beginning of July. Under the banner of "the digital revolution and a crisis of democracy: feminists economics responses and imaginations for the future" the conference brought more than 700 scholars, activists and policymakers from 85 countries together, exploring topics such as women's rights in a gig economy and public investment on care and green transition. Our colleague Anna Luíza Behrens-Castella was delighted to have the opportunity to meet and learn from brilliant feminist academics, including economist Professor Jayati Ghosh (pictured) #IAFFE2024

The role of central banks has expanded massively. Since the global financial crisis of 2008, the ECB and its counterparts have pursued policies that go well beyond conventional price stability, acting as a guarantor of macroeconomic and financial stability in the event of crises. What do the resulting power and the distributional consequences of monetary policy decisions mean for the democratic legitimacy of central banks? The economic historian Eric Monnet calls for an updated institutional framework to preserve the legitimacy of central bank independence and put central bankers at the service of greater, more democratic ends. We invited him to discuss all of this, as well as his proposal to create a European Credit Council. 🗓 July 11, 2024 at 14:30 CET, Zoom Sign up 👉 https://bit.ly/3XHIB3v
