It is very promising that Ursula von der Leyen will appoint an EU Commissioner with responsibility for #IntergenerationalFairness who's role will be "to ensure that decisions taken today do not harm future generations”. 👏 👏 👏 This was one of the announcements she made last week in her Political Guidelines for the next 5 years. But intergenerational fairness is more than just an add-on. It needs to be embedded in decision-making if it is going to enable Europe to shape the future for the better, instead of just dealing with things when they happen. #PoliticalGuidelines #StrategicForesight #Futures #FutureGenerations

📢 Ursula von der Leyen wants to appoint a Commissioner with responsibilities for ‘intergenerational fairness’ In her speech to the European Parliament this morning, ahead of the vote later today on the #EUTopJobs, she proposed the Commissioner to lead work, "to ensure decisions taken today do not harm #FutureGenerations and there is increased #solidarity between people of different ages". Long-term thinking is critical not only for young people, but also for competitiveness, democracy, social and economic resilience, and the green and digital transition.

Newly-elected Members of the European Parliament are meeting for the first time this week One of their first responsibilities is to vote on the EU #topjobs, including a second term as European Commission President for Ursula von der Leyen 🗳 Von der Leyen needs to convince across the political spectrum ↔ and across the whole of Europe 🇪🇺 that she has a plan to heal division and bring prosperity – to get Europe out of crisis mode As Jakob Hafele wrote in this recent opinion for Project Syndicate 👇 at the heart of such a plan lies Europe’s diverse regions. With a unified #IndustrialPolicy approach which puts regional advantages – in renewables, in skills, in labour, in costs - at the centre, von der Leyen can unlock #competitiveness and the green transition, and bring jobs, investment and hope to left-behind regions that desperately need it.
