And our emergency shelter is just one of the programs that make Berks County a better place to live and help everyone to thrive. In 1984, a man froze to death and 5 churches worked together to create a shelter. Now, 40 years later, we continue to provide emergency shelter for people experiencing homelessness. The story doesn't end there. We celebrate each client as he/she leaves the shelter and moves to a place he/she calls home.
