Rhode Island’s Port of Providence (Waterson Terminal Services, LLC) is a buzzing hive of offshore wind activity. It’s home to the nation’s first advanced foundation component assembly facility – operated by Riggs Distler and developer Ørsted – as well the first U.S. offshore wind submarine cable terminal via subsea cable firm WIND. It hosts component warehousing, operations & maintenance activities, vessel services, and has supported critical steps in constructing both South Fork Wind and now, Revolution Wind. But above all, it’s where hundreds of individuals – many of whom are local to the area – come to work daily. ProvPort is just one of the 25 U.S. ports Oceantic Network has identified as currently involved in offshore wind, or undergoing development to support the industry, with even more in the pipeline. In this edition of the Offshore Wind at Work Newsletter, we take a boots-on-the-ground look at ProvPort and Portsmouth Marine Terminal (which is supporting Dominion Energy’s Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind) to better understand how they’ve positioned themselves for success in this growing industry. #OSWatWork #OffshoreJobs #OffshoreWind

Ports are an essential part of building an offshore wind industry. Not only are they necessary for the success of U.S. offshore wind, but they also bring benefits to the economy in their construction and operation. Oceantic Network has identified 25 U.S. ports currently involved in offshore wind or undergoing development to support the industry, sparking at least $4 billion in new investments. The construction of the first half-dozen operating ports has already supported at least 1,000 jobs and are expected to sustain another 400 jobs annually, helping inject important economic development into port cities up and down the East Coast. In order to bring U.S. offshore wind to life, we must invest in our ports. Our latest article “Port Power: Fueling U.S. Offshore Wind And Local Economies,” details the current state of U.S. offshore wind’s ports, concerns and next steps. This past week a group of Oceantic Network staff traveled to Boulder, CO, where they met with National Renewable Energy Laboratory and attended a very successful OSW Drinks! The team visited National Renewable Energies Laboratory’s Flatirons Campus, and had various meetings across a different spectrum of topics. They also had many great networking opportunities, knowledge sharing, and strategizing. “Offshore Wind Drinks of the Rockies” co-hosted by National Renewable Energies Laboratory, DNV, and ERM had such a crowd! It was great to see so many people, and an important spotlight and recognition that our industry and supply chain expands beyond coastal states! #offshorewind #OSWatWork

Meet one of our summer interns, Isabel Gulden! Isabel is currently a junior at Reed College (Portland, Ore.) where she is studying sociology with an eye towards environmental policy. She's interested in understanding how people organize to make change, and hopes to use that knowledge to help design effective institutions to combat the climate crisis. This summer she's working with the industry education and policy teams at the Network, helping to inform businesses about opportunities in offshore wind and stay informed on the rapidly changing policies affecting the industry. Isabel grew up around Los Angeles before moving to Portland for college. In her free time she enjoys exploring the city and discovering new movies to watch while knitting or crocheting.
