NCEDA President Gary Lanier, Ed.D. gave a warm welcome at this year's Basic Economic Development Course (BEDC) at the UNC School of Government! Last year, our very own Torsha Eubanks attended the BEDC, a foundational program that equips participants with essential knowledge and skills in economic development. Reflecting on her experience, Torsha shared, "I think the BEDC is a very informative and valuable course. It was nice taking the course with my fellow NCEDA members. And I managed to make some new friends while taking the course!" We're proud that Torsha's participation in the course has deepened her expertise and reinforced NCEDA's commitment to fostering economic development across North Carolina. #NCEDA #EconomicDevelopment

We had a great turnout at NCEDA’s first Economic Development Practitioner Workshop! It’s been an insightful day with practitioners engaging with each other and learning about a variety of ways to help advance economic development initiatives through grants and funding resources, communicating with elected officials, and current incentives offered at the state level. We ended today’s workshop with Jonathan Morgan, Professor at UNC School of Government, providing insights about communicating with and educating elected officials about economic development – an important tool to create more economic development opportunities in our communities. Thank you to our event sponsors who helped make today possible! It’s because of their support that today was a success. · Gold sponsor - NC Global TransPark Economic Development Region · Program sponsors - NC Carolina Core & North Carolina's Southeast If you’re interested in being a sponsor for future NCEDA events, please visit: https://lnkd.in/eAdGPb_3 #NCEDA #EconomicDevelopment

We just heard from Scott T. Hamilton with The Golden LEAF Foundation, David McRae and Hillary Sherman with North Carolina Department of Commerce, and Reginald Speight with USDA Rural Development who gave insights on the latest information on grant and funding resources with their respective organizations. As all economic developers know, having an awareness of what funding sources are available is often crucial for advancing economic development initiatives forward. We’re grateful to these speakers for sharing such valuable information! #NCEDA #EconomicDevelopment

It’s a great morning here at the Economic Development Practitioner Workshop in High Point! Economic Development Practitioners from across the state have come together to hear from our esteemed speakers on topics pertinent to economic development initiatives, network with one another, and gain valuable insights that directly impact the communities they serve. We just heard from Ernie Pearson, Senior Counsel, and David Spratley, Director of Economic Development, with Maynard Nexsen on crafting economic development incentives. David informed practitioners of the most up to date available incentives and Ernie gave practitioners creative approaches on how to propel these incentives forward. We're off to a great start! #NCEDA #EconomicDevelopment

The NCEDA Foundation is proud to have supported the North Carolina's Electric Cooperatives economic development intern this summer! We are excited to introduce Mackie Jackson and learn about her summer experience! "My brief time as NCEMC’s Economic Development Intern has been filled with diverse and professionally enriching experiences. I wrote my first published magazine article covering industrial site due diligence, traveled across the state to learn about regional development needs, and completed GIS work for our site identification partners - all within the last month. I’m grateful to have a role in which I can utilize my graphic design skills, as well as apply knowledge from my geography and statistics coursework to improve the lives of rural North Carolinians. I am amazed at the variety of career opportunities that this field presents, and I have learned that NCEDA members are the engine that drives the prosperous future of our state. Thank you for your generous support of my growth as a young professional!" #NCEDAFoundation #NCEDA

This week we're spotlighting NCEDA member Ashley Nowell! Originally from Auburn, AL, she is an alumna of Oklahoma Baptist University. Presently, she calls the Charlotte area her home, where she serves as the Business Development Director for the Town of Waxhaw. We asked Ashley five questions to get to know her better: 1. What do you love the most about your job? I love getting to interact and work with all types of people - small business owners, property owners, volunteers, developers, residents. 2. What has been your biggest professional achievement? Waxhaw expanded its Main Street program in 2023 by creating a non-profit organization to partner with the town in promoting Downtown Waxhaw. It was a 2-year long process to get it off the ground, but it's so rewarding to see the organization be successful and volunteers and businesses get engaged. 3. How did you get into the field of economic development? I've worked in downtown development for the last 8 years but have recently expanded my role in Waxhaw to working in economic development as well! 4. What career advice to do live by? Brené Brown said that she's a "recovering perfectionist and an aspiring good-enoughist". 5. What is your favorite place that you have traveled? Anywhere with a baseball stadium! #NCEDA #EconomicDevelopment
