About us
The National Center for Additive Manufacturing Excellence (NCAME) was founded in 2017 through a collaboration between Auburn University (AU) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) leveraged by a signed AU/NASA Space Act Agreement. The Center is also a founding partner of the ASTM Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (AM CoE). NCAME strives to be a transitioning mechanism from fundamental to applied research aligned with the need of industry. The Center also aims to lead and foster effective collaborations amongst industry, government, academia, non-profit organizations, and ASTM committees for ensuring a coordinated, global effort toward rapidly closing standards and workforce development gaps in additive manufacturing.

🎉🎉Reflecting on a Successful AM Qualification and Certification Training in sunny Singapore 🌥️🌥️! Last week, we wrapped up our intensive training event together with the Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology, A*STAR - Agency for Science, Technology and Research A*STAR SIMTech & ARTC - Knowledge Transfer Office, and AM CoE team is thrilled to share the collective achievements we’ve experienced. This training session was more than just AM Qualification and Certification. It was a vibrant exchange of ideas, a networking session, and a testament to the power of utilizing ASTM International standards for AM Qualification and Certification. A heartfelt thanks to all the participants who brought their passion and dedication, to the speakers/trainers who shared their invaluable insights, case studies, and to the organizers Chen-Nan Sun, Ph.D. and Manickavasagam Krishnan, who ensured a seamless and enriching experience for everyone. We’re walking away with not just enhanced expertise, but also with connections that transcend the professional sphere. Here’s to continuous learning and the endless pursuit of excellence! Feel free to contact us at amcoe@astm.org if you are interested in conducting training at your organization. At the end of 2023-2024 academic year, we are thrilled to reflect upon #NCAME’s incredible growth. Starting from a humble lab with just five people, #NCAME has grown to a team of 30+ researchers, graduate students, and staff conducting groundbreaking additive manufacturing research. Now, #NCAME’s commitment and excellence on its missions on public-private partnership, #research and #development, industrialization, and education & workforce development are stronger than ever before. Thank you to everyone who's contributed to NCAME's success so far! National Center for Additive Manufacturing Excellence (NCAME) wishes you a productive summer. #WarEagle! #NCAME has been working in collaboration with NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration to investigate the mechanical behavior, including tensile and fatigue, of a newly developed NASA Glenn Research Center alloy GRX-810 across a wide temperature range up to 2100F. GRX-810 is a NiCoCr-based, oxide dispersion strengthened alloy developed and commercialized by #NASA and has gained a lot of attention for #aerospace and other high temperature applications. NCAME’s effort is part of its NASA’s Optimized and Repeatable Components using Additive (ORCA) project which is a public-private partnership to develop and advance new alloys and post-processing techniques using additive manufacturing for #space exploration. Stay tuned for our upcoming publications on GRX-810! At the 2024 Advanced Manufacturing for Defense Conference, #NCAME provided an overview of Auburn University’s additive manufacturing (#AM) program. The presentation highlighted NCAME’s current efforts in: 1. forming #public_private_partnerships to bridging the mid-TRL research gap, 2. R&D to understand the #process_structure_property relationships for additive manufactured metallic materials, and 3. facilitating the industrialization of AM by probabilistic fatigue assessment leading to model_assisted/NDE-assisted qualification. Volumetric #defects can significantly impact the #reliability of Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) parts by compromising their structural integrity. To gain a deeper understanding of the L-PBF process and the formation of anomalies, in-situ sensing of real-time data during fabrication is crucial. For a project sponsored by the Federal Aviation Administration, and in collaboration with the EOS, #NCAME is investigating the sensitivity of in-situ monitoring system to detect the process variation and the formation of build anomalies during fabrication. This collaborative effort is aimed to improve L-PBF process control and reliability for #AM parts.
