We are heartbroken by the suspected drunk driving crash that killed Khyree Jackson, 24, Minnesota Vikings rookie cornerback, and two of his former high school football teammates in Maryland, Anthony Lytton Jr., 24, and Isaiah Hazel, 23. Jackson, Lytton and Hazel each went on to college careers. Jackson played at Alabama and Oregon and was a fourth-round pick of the Vikings in April. Lytton played at Florida State and Penn State and Hazel played at Maryland and Charlotte. MADD stands by the families in this challenging time, offering support as they cope with this devastating tragedy. Losing a loved one in such a way is a traumatic and heartbreaking experience that alters lives permanently. A preliminary investigation shows the driver of another car allegedly attempted a high-speed lane change, striking one car before hitting the Dodge Charger driven by Hazel, forcing it off the road. Jackson and Lytton were passengers in the Charger. Investigators suspect alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash. MADD will be closely monitoring this suspected drunk driving crash and will update accordingly. Drunk driving fatalities have increased by 33% since 2019. Over 13,000 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes in 2022. We urgently need a solution to end this deadly public health crisis. Passive, lifesaving auto technology is the answer. MADD looks forward to the day when all new vehicles are equipped with impaired driving prevention technology, required by federal law through the HALT Act as soon as 2026. This technology is expected to save more than 10,000 lives a year and prevent hundreds of thousands of injuries.

Attending the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Diversity Forum in Atlanta was an invaluable experience. I had the opportunity to engage with community leaders and partners, gaining critical insights on how MADD can better connect with the black community. Our discussions emphasized the importance of culturally tailored approaches and building strong, trust-based relationships. We are excited to implement these learnings and continue our mission to end impaired driving and support all communities. Jill Arrington Stacey D.
