BASF’s Method to Optimize the Gas-assisted Injection Molded Designer Chair without Changing Design In this project, BASF used Moldex3D to run a prospective simulation of gas-assisted injection molding (GAIM) to analyze a designer chair. They faced a major problem of gas fingering inside the sitting surface and the backrest of the chair. The structural integrity of the chair would cause it to fail with loadings. As the chair is a designer chair, the mold is already manufactured, and there is no room for mold modification development in the design end. Simple XY Plot in Moldex3D to View Key Property Variation throughout Molding Cycle When manufacturing injection molded products, we can only see the final product and cannot directly observe the process during production. Knowing how the melt state changes will be more helpful in understanding the potential problems that may occur during injection molding. A New Flow-Fiber Coupling Model to Simulate the Anisotropic Flow for Fiber-Reinforced Thermoplastics Fiber-reinforced thermoplastic (FRT) composites have been commercially available for reducing vehicle weight and improving fuel efficiency in the automotive and aerospace industries. They can be processed by fast, highly-automated methods such as compression molding and injection molding. The fibers and the resin are transported into the mold cavity. The anisotropic flows of fiber-reinforced melts depend significantly on fiber orientation states. Felli Improved the Flow Imbalance Issue by 99% Felli engineers were tasked with producing mass quantities of a food storage container. The development objectives were to achieve shorter cycle times and higher success rates and to reduce the need for post processing. The part was gating with a valve gate hot runner system to reduce materials and avoid surface defects. However, the corner effect was induced by the valve gate hot runner system and resulted in unbalanced flow and caused weld lines, air traps, and halo marks. Let’s Simplify the RTM Setting Workflow in Simulation The Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) process is used in the manufacturing of polymer reinforced composite products and widely applied in the aerospace, wind power, automotive and sports industries. The RTM process includes prepreg draping, filling, heating/curing, and demolding.
