  • The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE), Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Center is offering trainings on restorative practices during the month of August for people who work in education, offer restorative justice/practices and otherwise support youth. Trainings are being offered at MDE and in Virginia, Minnesota. Register for Restorative Circle and Chats Trainings at https://lnkd.in/gtBBxz8C. Restorative practices is an approach schools can use to improve school climate and repair harm, based in the knowledge and worldview of many Indigenous cultures and communities of color.

  • This June we announced that 23 Minnesota school districts and community organizations have been awarded $27 million in After-School Community Learning Grants to be used to provide culturally affirming and enriching afterschool and summer learning programs for school-aged youth. The funds will be used over the next three years to benefit youth across the state as well as 250 partner organizations that are working with grant recipients. Partner organizations include tribes and tribal organizations, community-based organizations, culturally specific organizations, public libraries, colleges and universities, schools and other organizations. https://lnkd.in/gdfzgx5J

    Deputy General Counsel - General Counsel 1 Salary Range: $50.25 - $71.95 / hourly; $104,922 - $150,231 / annually This position will play a key role in the Office of General Counsel at MDE. MDE's Office of General Counsel provides leadership and legal expertise to support the Department's compliance with state and federal laws so that MDE can best fulfill its mission to ensure that every child in Minnesota receives a quality education, no matter their race or zip code. The Deputy General Counsel will lead a team of attorneys to provide legal advice and expertise to the Department on a wide array of issues and matter types. Specifically, this position will: -Manage a team of attorney(s) and legal staff; -Assist the General Counsel in coordinating and managing the Department's legal advice and litigation; -Provide legal advice to the Department on a variety of complex issues; -Collaborate with other Department staff concerning implementation of the Department's policies and practices; -Coordinate with the Attorney General's Office regarding the Department's legal disputes and litigation; -Supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; -Manage the development of legal training on a variety of topics to Department staff; -Oversee the Department's rulemaking activities; -Coordinate and complete special projects as assigned by the General Counsel; and -Assume the duties of General Counsel in case of absence.   • Congratulations to Brooklyn Center Community Schools on earning the Innovation in the Cultural Diversity of School Meals Healthy Meals Incentive Award recognition from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Action for Healthy Kids this June. Brooklyn Center Community Schools introduced culturally diverse menu items such as Fiesta Beans, Roasted Peppers and Corn, and Chicken and Vegetable Stir Fry. Their Healthy Meals Specialist conducted taste test events and engaged students, families, staff, and school administrators in conversations about school meals and how they can better reflect the culture of the community.
