This June we announced that 23 Minnesota school districts and community organizations have been awarded $27 million in After-School Community Learning Grants to be used to provide culturally affirming and enriching afterschool and summer learning programs for school-aged youth. The funds will be used over the next three years to benefit youth across the state as well as 250 partner organizations that are working with grant recipients. Partner organizations include tribes and tribal organizations, community-based organizations, culturally specific organizations, public libraries, colleges and universities, schools and other organizations. https://lnkd.in/gdfzgx5J

I really appreciate this framework and the role it plays in our work at Barr - AND I keep thinking about how helpful it would have been in my previous roles. When you work in advocacy, you have to choose what you will focus on at any given moment. By laying out a comprehensive framework, the Indicators of School Quality can help advocates pinpoint how the issues they are tackling connect with others, and what else needs to move to drive impact for young people.
Director of Education at Barr Foundation | School Design, Nonprofit Management, Education Policy, Program Development, Philanthropy
The Barr Foundation Education Program believes that all young people are worthy of a fantastic high school experience that supports them to flourish during their adolescent years and prepares them to pursue their dreams and goals. But what do excellent and equitable high schools look like in practice? Our team recently reflected on the value of anchoring our work in the seven Indicators of School Quality, developed by Springpoint, and some of the ways our school and nonprofit partners are using this framework to advance equity and excellence in New England high schools. #doingHSdifferently https://lnkd.in/em4fGGkh

Summer learning is critical for students and families across the state. Currently the system is unequitable, favoring families that have the ability to fund summer learning opportunities for their child while students in rural communities or from low-income backgrounds don’t have the same resources, access and opportunity. Funding HB 4082 would provide districts rescouces to provide this support with the flexibility to partner with community based organizations and Education Service Districts. Ensuring that students who need it the most receive the support they deserve. Districts are being asked to do more and more and they can’t do it alone. “Moreover, the grant funds available in HB 4082 incentivize our neighborhood public schools to establish strong and sustained relationships with other organizations in the community. These types of partnerships are critical to providing students with wraparound services that meet the needs of the whole child.” Click on the link to learn why Oregon School Boards Association, Coalition of Oregon School Administrators, Oregon School Employees Association, Oregon Education Association all support this bill.

"For the second straight year, student enrollment in Colorado public schools declined, with pre-K-12 student enrollment for the 2023-24 school year hitting the state's lowest mark in a decade." We are beyond the point when school districts and communities need immediate relief. This is happening across the state in rural, suburban, and urban areas. We are looking for executive-level thought partners from education-centered nonprofits, school districts, and foundations. We hope to garner support and receive funds to implement a proof of concept in just one school community. The issues our communities are facing across the state are urgent. So, let's talk about the issues and what is needed to move the work forward. https://lnkd.in/gphUnTyq

Not just black parents, but all parents want and should have the FREEDOM, financial freedom, to choose the education option that the parents consider better for their children (even if not actually better). The US Supreme Court provides parents with the fundamental constitutional right to make decisions for their children so long as NOT causing HARM (which means parents are not required to pass some "best" or "better" test to have the right to decide). Parents: consider NOT arguing that you know what is best for your children. You might, but, good news, you don't have to know! Those who claim you should not make decisions for your children are basing those arguments on false positions! Please like, follow, and subscribe to ParentsUSA across all social media and make a donation to this 501(c)(3) nonprofit so that it can do more for more parents and their children!
"Who benefits from choice in education? The answer, of course, is everybody—at least, everybody can benefit if they're allowed to choose schooling options that work best for them and their children. That opportunity is perfectly captured by a recent article about black families in Texas who hope to use school vouchers to launch microschools that do a better job than the public school at teaching their children." #parentschoiceisschoolchoice #affordableeducationoptions #parentslove Please like, follow, and subscribe to Parents USA across all social media and consider financially supporting this 501(c)(3) so what it can do more for more parents and their children. https://lnkd.in/gqJMVSNp via Reason Foundation and Magazine

Today, we are proud to release our #WholeDC Community Learning Session Report which documents the incredible work being done by #DC education partners to ensure our systems and policies center on whole-child learning experiences. Too often, the potential impact of great policy work is limited because it is done in silos. PAVE designed the Whole DC Community Learning Sessions series to break that mold. Whole DC is a consortium of local education partners. This consortium brings together partners from across both traditional and public charter schools, organizations inside and on the periphery of the education system, and both the system and philanthropic sectors that invest in our schools, including District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS), DC Public Charter School Board, Education Forward DC, Porticus, DC Public Education Fund, PAVE (Parents Amplifying Voices in Education), Transcend, Turnaround for Children, and GW Center for Health and Health Care in Schools The report released today shares key insights from our five Whole DC Community Learning Sessions and the impact of those discussions. The conversations focused on specific areas of policy and practice, including: -Social Emotional Learning -Restorative Practices -Mental Health Clinicians -School Culture -Family Engagement Over the coming weeks, we look forward to using this space to dive deep into the report’s findings and the highlights from each of the 5 learning sessions. And today, you can read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/eY_4qvEb

We are champions of the National Partnership for Student Success (NPSS), a diverse coalition that connects nonprofits, school districts, state and local education agencies, federal agencies, philanthropy, and national and community organizations to support increased access to and implementation of student support programs, provides technical assistance and research to enhance program effectiveness, and helps to recruit AmeriCorps members and volunteers to the effort. All students deserve the opportunities and support they need to succeed. Despite the heroic efforts of schools, educators, and families, the pandemic exacerbated educational and mental health challenges and widened long-standing inequities and opportunity gaps. To address these challenges, the President has called for Americans to become tutors, mentors, success coaches, post-secondary transition coaches, and wraparound/integrated support providers. In pursuit of this goal, the NPSS focuses on these five key, evidence-based areas to support the needs of students both in and out of school. Legislators should pass HB 4082 "House Bill 4082 would invest $50 million for school districts that have a developed plan for summer learning programs that provide a minimum of 80 hours of instruction or activities through tribal and community partnerships. "The programs would be required to focus on academic enrichment and youth development and must have plans for family engagement and accessibility. In short, to qualify for funds from the state, school districts must have a summer learning program that is focused on helping Oregon’s students develop the skills necessary to continue to rebound from pandemic-related learning losses." For most K-12 students across America, December marks the end of the Fall semester. While young people wait with bated breath for the start of the holiday break, the U.S. Senate is considering expanding access to community schools nationwide. The Full-Service Community School Expansion Act of 2023, legislation championed by U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio, expands upon Ohio’s success with the community schools model. If passed, this bill would allocate $3.6 billion over five years to expand access to community schools serving low-income families. Beyond that, it would provide federal grants to existing community schools and build a community school infrastructure by establishing state-level teams and channeling more resources to meet the healthcare and early childhood needs faced by school districts nationwide. https://lnkd.in/ekmyR5w4?
