We are mobilizing the nation’s health professionals for equitable climate solutions. Annual Meeting | Feb. 11-13, 2024
About us
Climate change is the greatest public health crisis of the 21st century. As consistently trusted messengers to the public, health professionals have a crucial role to play in raising public awareness of the health threat posed by climate change and catalyzing action. The Medical Society Consortium on Climate and Health organizes major medical societies representing over 1 million physicians and health professionals to carry three simple messages: 1. Climate change is harming Americans today, with people of color and communities living in poverty experiencing greater harm. 2. The way to slow or stop these harms is to decrease the use of fossil fuels and increase energy efficiency and the use of clean energy sources. 3. These changes in energy choices will improve the quality of our air and water and bring immediate health benefits.

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is essential for improving health care quality, safety, and equity. Health plans, with their significant financial and policy influence, are key to driving this change. They can design policies, determine benefits, negotiate costs, and incentivize sustainable practices, thus reducing operational costs, improving health outcomes, and benefiting the planet. "Recognizing the inextricable link between planetary health and the well-being of their patients, health plans have a responsibility to drive environmental sustainability within the system." #ClimateChange #Health #HealthCare #HealthPlans #GreenhouseGases #Emissions #PatientCare #Patients #ClimateIsHealth

A new study reveals the growing threat of extreme heat in US prisons and jails, hitting southern states hardest and exacerbating health inequities. Researchers found that the number of hot days experienced per year has increased at more than 1,000 facilities — primarily in the South. Texas, Florida, Arizona, and Louisiana have the greatest exposure to potentially hazardous heat days, but none provide universal access to air conditioning in their state-run prisons. These dangerous and inhumane conditions put the health of millions of incarcerated people at risk and are especially severe for those with pre-existing conditions and mental illness. #ClimateChange #Health #Incarceration #Heat #ExtremeHeat #Equity #HealthEquity #EnvironmentalJustice #ClimateIsHealth

Earlier this year, the Biden administration paused the licensing of new liquified natural gas (LNG) exports. While this pause has since been lifted, the Department of Energy (DOE) must uphold the public interest through informed, science-based decision-making. That's why we joined 20+ health organizations in calling on the DOE to review the current peer-reviewed evidence on public health and health equity harms of the entire LNG lifecycle from fracking to exports. We know that if the DOE reviews this evidence, they will, like us find that continued LNG exports are not in the public's best interest. #ClimateChange #Health #LNG #LNGExports #FossilFuels #Equity #ClimateIsHealth

Hurricane Beryl’s record-breaking strength and early rapid intensification highlight the stark impact of human-caused climate change driven by burning fossil fuels. "When we’re warming the planet with our fossil-fuel emissions, we’re making it more likely that we have those warm ocean waters that can allow a storm like Beryl to really develop and intensify quickly." #ClimateChange #Health #ExtremeWeather #Hurricanes #HurricaneSeason #Storms #ClimateIsHealth

The Consortium celebrates OSHA's proposed rule to protect workers from extreme heat. It is a pivotal step towards ensuring that all workers have access to essential protections against heat-related hazards. We urge the swift finalization and implementation of this safety standard, which will benefit the health of approximately 36 million indoor and outdoor workers across various industries.
