We had a fantastic conclusion to our five-day Latina Labs program, where students worked in teams to develop PowerPoint presentations showcasing their camp experiences to their families. This impressive group of students presented in both Spanish and English, demonstrating their multilingual abilities. Some shared experiences with robot dogs and turtle trapping, while others enjoyed the camaraderie of like-minded students with similar backgrounds, fostering stronger connections with other Latinas. The students presented to their parents, sharing the incredible bonds they formed during the camp. We then celebrated their achievements with the presentation of camp completion certificates and gifts, including Kindles, bookbags, school supplies, student journals, and more. The event concluded with closing remarks by Rebecca Singhavong, CPA, MBA Singhavong, Board Chair of Latinas Leading Tomorrow, who expressed her joy and pride in the community building, curiosity, and inclusivity ignited throughout the program. Thank you to all our volunteers, Marymount professors, and Board members who made this event possible! The fourth day at Latina Labs was thrilling. Students delved into the fold-and-cut problem, also known as straight-cut origami, guided by Dr. Jacquie Rische. They explored whether a shape can be folded so it can be cut out with a single straight cut. Learning the basics of geometry through different shapes including triangles, circles, and how triangles form star-shapes, Meanwhile, Dr. Shama Iyer led an exciting session on robotics, where students took on the challenging task of assembling and programming robot dogs. They worked together in teams screwing, sequencing parts, identifying orientations of parts, and learning about the inner workings of motors. This day ignited curiosity and creativity, while also strengthening friendships among the students. #STEM #Education #LatinaLabs #Geometry #Origami #Robotics #Teamwork #Innovation #Curiosity #Creativity

DAY 2 at Latina Labs: Exploring Turtle Trapping and 3D Printing! Today was another incredible day at Latina Labs with hands-on STEM activities designed to inspire and motivate middle school girls.  Turtle Trapping with Dr. Todd Rimkus: The girls visited a local pond where they built a turtle trap, captured turtles, and saw how a chip is used to track them in nature as way to learn about wildlife conservation and design engineering.  3D Printing with Dr. Eric Bubar: Dr. Bubar guided the students through the exciting world of 3D printing and how it can be harnessed to build prosthetics for people with missing limbs. They worked on designing their own 3D models including an “non-melting snowflake” which they will be able to take home at the end of their camp experience. The combination of technology and sparked-curiosity made for a truly engaging experience! This was a day filled with exploration, innovation, and lots of fun. Our goal is to ignite a passion for STEM in these young girls, and today was a great step in that direction. Special thanks to Marymount University for the partnership and Glenn W. Bailey Foundation, Dominion Energy, Gaston Araoz, and PENTAX Medical for sponsoring the event. #LatinaLabs #STEM #GirlsInSTEM #TurtleTrapping #3DPrinting #Education #MiddleSchool #Inspiration
