Last week Jeff Schmid, our president and CEO, visited our Denver Branch, which serves as the Federal Reserve's connection to Colorado, northern New Mexico and Wyoming. While there Jeff took some opportunities to engage with local communities. He visited the University of Colorado Boulder campus to meet with students and administrators of the Graduate School of Banking. Another highlight was his visit to Mercy Housing's The Rose on Colfax, along with Nicholas Sly, our Denver Branch executive, and other staff. The Rose on Colfax is a housing development that will provide affordable, service-rich apartments to low-income households. Latest Beige Book report from the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City: Hiring activity slowed as many businesses pulled back on new job postings, but employment levels were generally stable. Ongoing tightness in labor markets across the region supported modest growth in wages over the past couple of months. Rent growth slowed somewhat, driven by outsized growth in the supply of newly built units coming available across the District compared to other areas of the country.

Economic growth in Nebraska has been supported significantly by goods-producing industries over the past 1-2 years, in contrast to broader trends nationally where service-oriented industries have been more substantial following the pandemic. Agriculture and manufacturing have been key industries driving this growth. Together with John McCoy at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, more in depth information surrounding these trends is available at the following link. https://lnkd.in/gSgR23vF

Financial conditions in U.S. agriculture have weakened slightly over the past year, largely connected to a drop in the prices of major row crops. In the second quarter, lending activity appeared to increase significantly based on recent survey data maintained by the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, which is a continuation of data from the first quarter of the year showing a similar trend at commercial banks. In the article referenced below, Chart 1 is worth taking a closer look for those following economic trends in ag, which shows that financing for operating expenses increased substantially while financing of "other" expenses (purchases that tend to be more discretionary), pulled back significantly. https://lnkd.in/gqhs33V2
