Allyship begets community 🌈 Today is the 55th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, a watershed event in LGBTQ+ history. The commemoration of its anniversary was the impetus for the celebration of modern-day #pridemonth At the League, we seek to be strong allies to all members and to those we serve. In August, we’ll host one of our first programs for the League Year: LGBTQ+ 101, a training to foster networking and build understanding. This month and every month, we strive to listen, to learn, to support, and to be a tour-de-force in the community.

This week’s #MemberMonday is Dr. Marvinia Charles. She is our current St. Philips School & Community Center Signature Project Mentor. In previous years she volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and participated in the T. Boone Pickens Leadership Institute. Next year she will be in MAL Underwriting. Outside of the League, she is a doctor specializing in emergency medicine. Dr. Marvinia Charles joined the League in 2019. She says, “I wanted to learn about this new city I moved to 3 years prior. I wanted an outlet where I can use my leadership skills and knowledge to be impactful. It was a bonus once I joined to learn how many opportunities there were to build upon these skills and work on meaningful projects with dynamic, innovative, and intelligent women with impressive resumes.” “The provisional bus tour has been thus far one of my favorite memories. Many friendships have blossomed from that day. I thought it was such an efficient activity as you were able to gain a broad exposure to the different agencies the league partners within a limited time.” Dr. Marvinia says, “Girl’s Night Out at St. Philips has been an overall positive experience. So much so, I have signed up for another year with the girls. I went from feeling like a ‘chaperone’ to now a ‘role model’ to such impressionable and smart students. It has been a joy for me to witness their growth. Thus, why it is important for me to be a consistent figure in that role, and I am grateful for the opportunity to make an impact at that level.” As for potential New Members she says, “The Junior League experience differs for every woman in the league. It is not a one size fit all experience. The rewards are a product of your efforts to integrate and be an active member of the organization.” #JLD #BeBold #MemberMonday

This week’s #MemberMonday is Nicole Newkham Binkley CFRE. Nicole is our current VP of Communications. She spent her first year in Habitat for Humanity and next year will be on the Strategy Committee. Outside of JLD, she is the COO of Austin Street Center, the largest low-barrier homeless shelter in Dallas. Nicole says, “I am currently in my 6th active year of JLD. I wanted to meet like-minded women; women like me who want to change the world and make it a better place. My favorite event is the provisional bus tour - getting to see our agencies at work and the impact our donations make is critical to understanding JLD. As just one member you sometimes lose sight that as a group of 4,000 women, we make a HUGE impact in Dallas. Seeing this impact across the city during the tour motivates me to continue showing up. “I love our DEIB initiatives this year and think they are BOLDLY setting a new path for Dallas. Partnering with Together We Dine and the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum have educated our members on issues we haven't been talking about. This is crucial to learn from our mistakes and understand our community.” As for advice for Provisional New Members Nicole says, “DIVE IN! You truly get out of this experience what you put in. I have grown my career; and had babies and the women I have met through JLD have supported me every step of the way. We show up for each other, even when days are hard. JLD has shown me how women can show up for each other in a supportive way where we all thrive and I hope each Provisional New Member can feel this support and thrive in her own way.“ #BeBold #MemberMonday #JLD

Wrapping up National Volunteer Month by completing our Spring Project with my Junior League of Dallas Community Outreach committee. It has been such an impactful year and I've learned a lot with this wonderful group of ladies! As part of our project, we donated $5,000 worth of brand new professional work attire to Dress for Success Dallas and volunteered at their office. With the amazing Karen "KJ" Johnson at the helm, the organization runs like a well-oiled machine empowering women to achieve economic independence. Dress for Success provides a network of support, professional attire, and the development tools to help women thrive in work and life. It was an honor to partner with such a great organization.
