In our research, “Blockchain for International Development and Humanitarian Cases: A Deep Dive,” conducted by Impact Plus with the Frontier Tech Hub and funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), we explore the transformative influence of blockchain technology on international development and humanitarian aid.  The research focuses on blockchain technology's broad benefits and the dimensions where it adds value. The dimensions identified are trust creation,, visibility/traceability, speed, cost efficiency, decentralised structures, increased security and privacy, immutability, tokenisation, greater individual control over data, ethical considerations, sustainability, and accountability. To reach its conclusions, the study analysed fifteen startups worldwide working in different sectors using blockchains, such as supply chain, land registration and rights protection, decentralised finance, agriculture, identity, and financial inclusion. Among all these dimensions, all startups chose “trust creation” as the most important added value of using blockchain, followed by visibility and traceability, speed, decentralisation, and cost reduction. This exemplifies the application and effectiveness of blockchain in addressing complex challenges in these areas, showing its potential to increase the efficiency of international development and humanitarian programs. Importantly, Blockchain technology should not be used for the sake of using innovative technology. It must offer clear and substantial advantages over existing solutions. Suppose the proposed solution does not improve efficiency, transparency, or security (or any other key metric relevant to the specific application) to a degree that justifies its implementation and maintenance costs. In that case, it most probably does not provide sufficient value. Therefore, a thorough cost-benefit analysis and comparison with other technologies should be carried out before starting a blockchain pilot project. 📶 Blockchain Investors face heightened risks of misallocation of resources due to the absence of robust Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL) within the sector. Without systematic mechanisms to track progress, assess outcomes, ensure accountability, and facilitate learning, lack of transparency, and inability to gauge project effectiveness their efficacy is not guaranteed . This deficiency undermines investor confidence, hinders decision-making processes, and ultimately jeopardizes the success and sustainability of blockchain initiatives. Consequently, there is a pressing need to address these gaps in order to optimize their  investment strategies, enhance project governance, and foster the long-term viability of blockchain ventures. ◾ The implementation of a robust MEAL methodology instills confidence in investors, mitigates risks, and maximizes the potential for positive returns on investment. By providing robust monitoring and evaluation mechanisms, the  initiatives can demonstrate accountability, track progress, and showcase their projects' tangible impact. This transparency instills trust among investors and attracts new opportunities for funding and collaboration.
