About us
Israel Cancer Research Fund (ICRF) supports the best and brightest scientists conducting groundbreaking cancer research in Israel. Our goal is to end the suffering caused by cancer. The Answer to Cancer Is Research. ABOUT US: Israel Cancer Research Fund (ICRF) is the largest nonprofit in North America dedicated solely to supporting groundbreaking cancer research in Israel. ICRF was established in 1975 by a group of dedicated and visionary scientists, physicians and philanthropists in the U.S. and Canada. Their goal: to enable the most promising Israeli scientists to continue their important work in Israel where funds to support basic cancer research remain scarce, leaving too many promising investigations in need of funding. To date, ICRF has invested over $78 million in the most impactful Israeli cancer research, awarding more than 2,500 grants to scientists at all of the leading academic and research institutions throughout the country. ICRF grantees are selected through a rigorous annual peer review process conducted by a world-class Scientific Review Panel (SRP). To insure the most value for every donor dollar, ICRF awards go directly to the researcher without any university or research institute overhead reduction. ICRF-funded research has led to transformative discoveries for treating multiple myeloma, chronic myelogenous leukemia and other life-threatening tumors. More recently, Israeli scientists have made major contributions to immunotherapy research and targeted therapies. Today, ICRF has active chapters across the U.S., Canada and Israel. The International Executive Office is located in New York, NY.

Professor Tal Burstyn-Cohen, recipient of the ICRF – Joseph Safra Memorial Grant for Glioblastoma Research, aims to change the outlook for those suffering from glioblastoma (GBM), the most prevalent malignant brain cancer, affecting over 300,000 people globally each year. The disease not only carries a high mortality rate, but also causes a rapid decline in neurological function, leading to significant emotional and financial strain for patients and their families. Professor Ariel Munitz is a father of three children currently serving in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), a marathon runner for charity, and a true mensch – always looking to help others. Immediately after October 7th, without hesitation, he went back to his former IDF unit and volunteered to serve. Inspired by the selflessness of others and the powerful way the people of Israel uplift each other, Prof. Munitz felt compelled to do even more. Just weeks ago, he donated a kidney to save the life of someone he doesn’t even know. As Father’s Day approaches, we’re honored to share more about Prof. Ariel Munitz beyond his lab coat and microscope at Tel Aviv University. Check out his incredible story: https://lnkd.in/eK349Cvw

June is Cancer Immunotherapy Awareness Month, and we’re proud to highlight the research of Professor Yifat Merbl, which ICRF funds in collaboration with Cancer Research Institute (CRI), a leader in cancer immunotherapy research. Prof. Merbl recently received the Technology Impact Award from both organizations in recognition of the potential of her lab’s research in immunotherapy and cancer. This work will begin in July. The Merbl lab’s current research, also made possible by an ICRF-CRI partnership, wraps up later this month. Take a closer look at Prof. Merbl and her team’s critical immunotherapy work: https://lnkd.in/eKaGej-7

Meet Harrison Berg, a St. Paul Minnesota native, Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity brother at the The University of Kansas, and a role model for young people everywhere. Through reaching out to family, friends, and his network, Harrison came in first place for most funds raised for Israel Cancer Research Fund during AEPi’s recent Mensch Madness challenge. He also inspired and continues to motivate his entire chapter to make philanthropy a larger priority. ICRF is important to Harrison because he lost several family members to cancer, including his paternal grandmother he was very close with, who died from leukemia. He also feels a strong connection to Israel, especially now. We are incredibly grateful to Harrison and can’t wait to see all that he’ll accomplish in the future! We wish him and all of our college friends a wonderful and safe summer.

Today we remember and mourn the Israeli soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect and defend Israel, its people, and Jewish lives around the world. We also mourn the innocent lives lost to terror on and after October 7th. May all of their memories forever be a blessing. We hold onto hope that the hostages will come home soon. We stand with their families and communities during this unimaginably challenging time. Today and every day, we remain committed to ensuring that Israel not only survives — but thrives — and continues to be a beacon of hope for generations to come. #yomhazikaron #israelmemorialday

Today is #yomhashoah - Wherever we may be, let’s join with the people of Israel to remember together — and take a moment to hold all those lost in the Holocaust close to our hearts. On this solemn day, throughout Israel, all traffic stops, and a siren sounds to signal a moment of silence. The whole country pauses to remember and reflect. May we never forget.
