Kicking off a busy summer by diving into AI regulation! Last week, I had the pleasure of participating in a fantastic panel discussion at the IAPP KnowledgeNet - DC Chapter titled "AI Across Two Worlds: Challenges and Strategies for Compliance With EU and US Regulatory Regimes." The conversation explored the emerging regulatory landscape for AI, with a focus on navigating the similarities and differences between the EU AI Act, the Colorado AI Act, and US executive actions. I was honored to share the stage with such esteemed experts: Shane Cahill (Meta) and Aalok Mehta (Google). Our insightful moderator, Axel Spies (Morgan Lewis & Bockius LLP) expertly guided the discussion on key challenges and strategies for achieving compliance in this evolving space. Special thanks to Hannah Schaller (ZwillGen) and Gabriel Espinal (IDNTY Cinematography) for supporting execution of this great event. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the evolving regulatory landscape for AI! Feel free to share your insights or questions in the comments below. #IAPP #AI #compliance #EUAI #ColoradoAI #futureofwork #womenintech

It was a pleasure organizing and attending yesterday's IAPP KnowledgeNet - DC Chapter event! Many thanks to our panelists Anjelica Dortch, Shane Cahill, and Aalok Mehta, and to our moderator Axel Spies, for their great insights. Huge thanks to Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP for providing a beautiful venue and delicious food, and to Kyla Eastman for coordinating these details so masterfully. The panel highlighted some key challenges for #AI developers and users under emerging #AIlaws such as the #EUAIAct and the #COAIA and established #privacy regimes such as the #GDPR. Some of my main takeaways were: (1) How the new AI laws are interpreted will go a long way to determining whether they are useful and workable in practice - for example, compliance will be more feasible if EU member states avoid the kind of fragmented interpretations and approaches we've seen under GDPR. (2) The infrastructure doesn't yet exist to implement certain requirements under emerging AI laws. For example, many of these laws require third party assessments of various kinds, but standards for such assessments and the parties providing them haven't been established. The public and private sectors will need to undertake significant work and investment to get these supporting systems up and running by the time new AI laws start to take effect. (3) Even if there are established standards for assessments and documentation requirements, the pace of AI development means the results of these endeavors will change often, making it difficult to keep them current. (4) The AI workforce may not be sufficient to rise to the task of implementing emerging AI laws. We need more AI specialists, including more #AIgovernance professionals, to sustain the ecosystems that these laws put in place. Lastly, something I reflected on after the talk as I chatted with Christina Ayiotis, Esq., CRM, CIPP/E is that the sprawling challenges created by emerging #artificialintelligence regulations call for cross-functional collaboration within organizations among #privacypros and their counterparts in AI and cybersecurity. It takes a village to raise an AI system. If teams are too siloed, they will miss critical issues and overlook efficiencies and fruitful synergies. #dataprotectionlaw #dataprotection #privacylaws #riskmanagement IAPP - International Association of Privacy Professionals
