🌐 Advancing Health Equity: The Role of Medicaid Expansion 🌐 The federal government and numerous states have prioritized advancing health equity and addressing health disparities. President Biden’s Executive Order 13985 underscores this commitment by directing federal agencies to advance racial equity. Efforts also include enhancing the collection and reporting of race and ethnicity data and prioritizing maternal and infant health. Specifically tailored to Medicaid, initiatives like Medicaid expansion have significantly enhanced access to care, improved health outcomes, and reduced racial disparities in health coverage compared to non-expansion states. However, broader efforts are crucial to address systemic racism and inequities across healthcare and beyond, essential for reducing overall health disparities. Let's continue advocating for comprehensive policies that promote health equity and racial justice across sectors. 🔍 Addressing Racial Health Disparities through Medicaid 🔍 Racial and ethnic disparities in health remain persistent in the U.S., driven by inequities in access to healthcare and social determinants of health rooted in historic and ongoing racism and discrimination. As a major source of health coverage for people of color, Medicaid is crucial in addressing these disparities. Recent gains in coverage across racial and ethnic groups from 2019-2022 were driven by increases in Medicaid enrollment during the pandemic-related continuous enrollment provision. However, the unwinding of this provision could disproportionately affect people of color. It is vital to advocate for policies that maintain and expand Medicaid coverage to address and reduce these disparities.
