Holmes US is delighted to have five interns this summer! We are extremely appreciative of the effort of the team of interns across our San Francisco, Los Angeles and Portland offices. In turn, Holmes aims to introduce this team to a range of experiences that they can carry with them through their careers, including engineering calculations, analysis, site visits, and marketing. We want to take this opportunity on National Intern Day to recognize and show our appreciation to them, thank you! Microsoft Silicon Valley: Sustainably Harnessing Resources Onsite Beyond leveraging mass timber, Holmes US contributed to resilient design in the face of climate change when the project launched during a severe drought. To aid in water conservation, the structure supports a rainwater collection system—in part through five 60,000-gallon greywater tanks. Holmes strategically loaded these tanks within the new parking garage, utilizing dead space between ramps. The living roof’s wet meadow also collects storm water runoff. The system subsequently filters and stores rainwater onsite, producing 4M gallons of non-potable water annually and achieving Net Zero Water certification. Landscaping reestablishes native ecology with the tripling site landscaping. The roof structure supports up to four feet of soil and trees while accommodating assembly occupancy. To harness the power of the sun, PV roof canopies accommodate solar arrays. These panels provide partial power to the site while additional energy is sourced through GreenPrime—a 100% renewable and carbon-free electric generation service. The campus is intended to revitalize the health of both people and place. https://lnkd.in/e4rTk-fx Architect: WRNS Studio Contractor: Rudolph and Sletten Mass Timber Supplier: Structurlam Mass Timber Corporation is now Mercer Mass Timber Sustainability Consultant: Stok Targeted Sustainable Benchmarks: LEED Platinum, LBC Petal Certification, WELL Building. Microsoft Silicon Valley Campus: Talking Timber Holmes US advocated for and incorporated mass timber at unprecedented scale in North America—yielding an estimated 34% of structural embodied carbon savings. Over the project’s six-year-duration, we tackled code impediments, City requirements, supply chain limitations, and design of a complex hybrid system for manufacture and assembly. Our solution power-packs the mass timber structure with input from multiple trades: encapsulating architectural, contracting, manufacturing, and MEP constraints. Our fire and life safety code consulting also facilitated optimal wood exposure while meeting fire rating requirements across campus, especially in assembly areas. As a testament to our extensive collaboration, the project team installed over 2,400 tons of CLT panels in roughly six months. https://lnkd.in/e4rTk-fx Architect: WRNS Studio Contractor: Rudolph and Sletten Mass Timber Supplier: Structurlam Mass Timber Corporation is now Mercer Mass Timber Sustainability Consultant: Stok Targeted Sustainable Benchmarks: LEED Platinum, LBC Petal Certification, WELL Building. Microsoft Silicon Valley Campus: Scaling Up Mass Timber in North America Holmes US is proud to have led structural and fire engineering on Microsoft’s Silicon Valley Campus—including North America’s largest mass timber building at completion. Engaged from comprehensive planning, we helped meet bold sustainability and programming goals. Ultimately, the team merged a mass timber addition with two retrofits, ample courtyards, a vast living roof, and permeable parking to accommodate 2,000 employees over more than 1 million square feet combined. This campus serves as a benchmark for mass timber’s expansion into the California and US markets. Stay tuned for some of the mass timber and sustainability stories on campus. https://lnkd.in/e4rTk-fx Architect: WRNS Studio Contractor: Rudolph and Sletten Mass Timber Supplier: Structurlam Mass Timber Corporation is now Mercer Mass Timber Sustainability Consultant: Stok Targeted Sustainable Benchmarks: LEED Platinum, LBC Petal Certification, WELL Building. The mass timber and CLT diaphragm structure used sustainably sourced mass timber and other low carbon materials, the project team estimates they reduced the building’s embodied carbon emissions by nearly 22,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent. Holmes designed every component for deconstruction to allow flexibility in future programming needs. Judges said: it was a wonderful example of sustainability and functionality.

Justin Sharkey, PE and Christopher H. Patron, MS, EIT represented Holmes US at the AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles Berths 58-60 ribbon-cutting ceremony! This innovation center for ocean research will lead to a better understanding of marine ecosystems in the historic Port of Los Angeles buildings that are over a century old. Holmes designed the improvements for this project, including new steel framing for the renovated storefronts, new interior office and amenity spaces, building access stairs, and ramps. We are proud to have played a role in this building's adaptive reuse! #structuralengineering #marineresearch #innovationcenter
Today at AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles, U.S. Representative Nanette Barragan, City of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, Councilmember Tim McOsker, Los Angeles Harbor Commission President Lucille Roybal Allard and Vice President Diane Middleton, along with Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka celebrated the grand opening of a new section of AltaSea’s ocean research center. The ribbon was cut on the latest development of a $30 million renovation of three historic waterfront warehouses. This new Center for Innovation, spanning Berth 58 at the Port of Los Angeles will be home to researchers from @University of Southern California, UCLA , Caltech and more.
