Degenkolb Engineers has been honored with the SEAOSD - Structural Engineering Association of San Diego Structural Engineering Excellence Community Award for our work on the San Diego State University Don Powell Theater Retrofit! 🌟 This award celebrates projects that provide a meaningful benefit to the broader community. Degenkolbers Alvaro Celestino, SE, Juan Yescas, Aliana Sonza, PE, Chad Closs, Peter Maloney, Hannah Johnson, PE, Candice Hanna, PE, and Ray Barakat recently attended a ceremony to accept the award. The renovation of the 450-seat Main Stage at the Don Powell Theater introduced a luminous contemporary interior within the 1960s modernist building. This $35 million design-build project addressed critical space, technology, and accessibility issues, resulting in significant upgrades. Improved sightlines, universal access, recalibrated seating, and more enhanced the experience for performers and audiences alike. The project also included the renovation of the theater's audience chamber, lobby, and amenities. This renovation marks the first phase in establishing the SDSU Arts District, envisioned as a cultural anchor and destination for the campus. A big thank you to our amazing partners at HGA and Rudolph and Sletten for their collaboration on this transformative project! #StructuralEngineering #EngineeringExcellence #SDSU #SEAOSD #AwardWinning

Feature stairs increase connectivity between spaces and provide an opportunity for architecture to drive creativity and ingenuity. While not always visible, innovative structural solutions are key to achieving the desired impact. An effective, efficient structure opens opportunities for an impressive, open architectural expression. Ornamental stairs often demand unique configurations with no vertical supports between the connected floor plates. Structural solutions need to conform to both the building code and user vibration requirements, which typically control the design. Degenkolb develops economical solutions, including custom structural shapes, when necessary, to maintain architectural profiles while achieving structural performance requirements. We excel at developing hidden connections to efficiently and cost-effectively navigate seismic slip requirements. Furthermore, Degenkolb has recently invested in the development of advanced vibration modeling capabilities to augment our extensive experience in producing awe-inspiring designs. Feature stairs are an opportunity for the design team to create a moment for the users. Degenkolb strives to help our partners meet the intended vision.
