    Not to miss!

The world’s boardrooms hold immense influence over more than just finance and industry. They shape countless aspects of how we work, how we live, and what our collective future will look like. However, barring some sartorial differences, the members of today’s boardrooms look virtually unchanged from those of 100 years ago.   In this FWA Talk (our take on TED Talks), Crista Bailey of Him For Her explains why it's imperative to broaden the network of voices in the boardroom and outlines actionable steps to achieve gender diversity within the next decade. She offers insights and strategies to drive meaningful change and foster inclusive boardrooms that reflect the diversity of our society.   Secure your seat by July 17th to learn from Crista and other influential leaders who are elevating women in leadership, investing, and allyship.   https://lnkd.in/gJTkzkBg

It was incredibly fun and rewarding to reunite with two of my most favorite former colleagues, Jocelyn Mangan and Ryan Roslansky, to co-host with Ryan a dinner focused on the importance of Board diversity. Jocelyn founded Him For Her many years ago with the idea that Board diversity was critical to the commercial success of both private and public companies. The stats don't lie: Only one in four public company Board directors are women, and among private companies, that number drops to one in seven. Him For Her is squarely focused on bridging the gap between oft-unadvertised board opportunities and talented women who are ready for board service. I have long known Ryan was also a champion of this effort, so I invited him to co-host this dinner with me, and we both furthered our knowledge on this topic through the personal stories from all the guests. The fact that we realized our outfits matched upon arrival was purely coincidental! Thank you too to Lindsay Trout for sponsoring this successful event!

Despite the fact that diverse perspectives and backgrounds can significantly improve problem-solving within a board, and studies have shown that a diverse board leads to increased profitability, the reality is there is still too much sameness in this room.  In the latest Boardroom View, I break down how to change this and what we all need to start doing differently.

Overheard at last week's Him For Her dinner: “CEO's find the most valuable board director they have is the one that challenges groupthink and 'boardsplaining.' So when you look for a board director, instead of asking 'Who do we know' ask yourself 'What do we need?'" Thank you to all who attended an incredible Him For Her dinner last week hosted by First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom. Her work spans media with The Representation Project, to equal pay, to the broken care economy, to building better boards with the California Partners Project. We raised the topic of generative AI with increased attention to who is in the lead (and who is missing in the conversation). We surfaced the intersections of the private and public sector and how we can benefit from sharing competencies across both. And finally we discussed how important it is to foster partnership and empower one another to step outside our known networks for talent. #leadership #himforher #illumyn #buildingbetterboards Jocelyn Mangan

"Founders typically select board members based on the candidate's technical competence and network. While these qualities are valuable, they alone do not make for effective directors. We've seen accomplished CEOs contribute little to boards because of their need to always be right. We’ve also seen former McKinsey consultants with Harvard MBAs struggle to voice their opinions in the presence of authoritative founders. Effective directors balance two seemingly contradictory qualities: independent judgement and seamless collaboration. Independent judgement involves forming and articulating original opinions, offering fresh perspectives and holding executives accountable. It can only come from a broad and specialized knowledge base, business acumen, critical and systemic thinking, and the courage to dissent. The ability to collaborate is equally vital. This requires directors to be receptive to new ideas, respect others' opinions and share information generously. Directors should also be adept at “3D listening”, which entails understanding messages, observing non-verbal cues and grasping the context; expressing opinions clearly, candidly and without causing offence; and supporting and challenging executives and fellow directors to be creative and productive." https://lnkd.in/d7qHFfzf illumyn #buildingbetterboards
