Being on boards makes executives better operators. It's a wonder that many large corporations don't know this or encourage it as an executive career investment. I'd love to see that tide change.

✨ Boardroom Brilliance Spotlight ✨ This week, we had the honor of hosting Melissa Hathaway, Board Director at BT Federal, for an exceptional session. Drawing from her extensive decade-plus experience on public, private, and nonprofit boards, she shared some invaluable themes: 1. Executive alignment is key: When evaluating an opportunity, invest time in interviewing the CEO and CFO. Believing in these executives is critical to your success as a board member. Ask yourself, "would I hire them to run my company?" 2. Board interview prep: Conduct a thorough review of other board members as well as a self-evaluation to understand your unique contribution to this particular board ecosystem. 3. Manage your signal to noise ratio: Be thoroughly prepared, take strategic pauses, and employ the Socratic method during discussions. It disarms and directs conversations effectively. Melissa's wisdom is a guide for those navigating the path to board service for the first time and for those who already have a board seat. Cheers to embarking on board journeys that inspire, enlighten, and leave a lasting impact! At illumyn, we work closely with our sister company Him For Her to accelerate board opportunity for historically underrepresented, board-qualified leaders. Joining a board is a significant decision, and it's more than accepting an offer; it's about finding the right board that aligns with your values, aspirations, and skills. Remember, your board seat is a long-term commitment with the potential for lasting impact. Take your time, evaluate your options, and choose wisely.
