About us
The Global Youth Biodiversity Network (GYBN) is an international network of youth organizations and individuals from all over the world whose common goal is to prevent the loss of biodiversity. GYBN aims to represent the voice of global youth in the negotiations under the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), raise awareness among young people of the values of biodiversity, and connects individuals and youth organizations in order to build a global coalition to halt the loss of biodiversity. As the official major group for youth in the negotiations under the CBD, GYBN is committed to bringing the opinions and positions of young people into the political process; empowering young people to take action. Recognized and supported by the CBD Secretariat, GYBN seeks to inspire global youth and future leaders to work for the sustainable use and conservation of biodiversity for a healthy environment and society. As of December 2016, GYBN has 115 member organizations, representing a total of 342.000 members from 107 countries worldwide. Guiding principles Biodiversity is life; it is crucial to the balance of ecosystems and the survival of all species. Despite of this, it continues to be lost at an unprecedented rate. This loss is one the greatest challenges of our time and hence, needs to be addressed on all levels. Vision Our vision is to transform the world into one that does not experience human- induced biodiversity loss and where people live in harmony with nature. Mission Our mission is to build a global coalition of individuals and youth organizations to halt the loss of biodiversity through mobilising and empowering young people whilst raising global awareness on the importance of biodiversity. 🌎Last month, the Global Youth Biodiversity Network had the incredible opportunity to attend the 2nd Global Biodiversity Framework Fund Council Meeting. Two of our representatives were able to join: our Co-Policy Coordinator, Heitor Dellasta Dellasta, and Bonita Bernard,GYBN Guyana . 👉Here’s what we celebrated and highlighted during the gathering: ➡️The launch of the first Global Biodiversity Framework Fund (GBFF) Work Program, with a significant investment of USD 37.82 million. This fund includes two projects for #Brazil and one for #Mexico. We’re particularly excited about the Biodiversity Conservation in Indigenous Lands project, which we hope will set a precedent for projects that ensure prior, free, and informed consultation, meaningful participation, and direct financial access for #IndigenousPeoples. ➡️The establishment of the GBFF is a timely response to the COP’s call for a financial mechanism to support the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). The GBFF must align with the GBF’s goals and targets, emphasizing the meaningful participation of Indigenous Peoples, local communities, women, and youth, while promoting human rights-based, gender- and youth-sensitive approaches and seeks to increase support for local biodiversity conservation projects.
