CodonBert – Sanofi’s first SLM We have just published our CodonBert paper in Genome Research (https://lnkd.in/d36jKnxK). CodonBert is a small language model (SLM) for mRNAs. CodonBert was trained from scratch by Sanofi using the BERT architecture on more than 12M mRNA sequences from several different species. It learned, on its own, several key biological properties of codons including correctly grouping those encoding for the same amino acids and their evolutionary trajectory. We then used CodonBert’s understanding of the mRNA language of mRNA to optimize several properties of our vaccine designs. Each mRNA vaccine encodes for a protein. There are countless many ways in which we can encode the same viral protein using mRNA (depending on the protein, these can reach 3^500 which is more than the number of stars in the universe). As the video below shows, CodonBert is used to search the most effective, robust and safe mRNA for a specific vaccine. By training a SLM to learn the codon language we can greatly improve on the ability to select the most appropriate mRNA leading to better and safer vaccines. CodonBert was jointly developed by Sanofi’s Digital organization and our mRNA Center of Excellence. It is now incorporated into our pipelines for selecting molecules for all the different types of vaccines we are developing. We are also working on further optimizing the SLM to include non coding regions of the mRNA.
