Protecting Wildlife and Wilderness

About us

Our mission is to enhance the management of ‘forgotten’ National Parks and Protected Areas in partnership with governments and local communities, and to empower people to protect wildlife and wilderness around the world. We work in forgotten national parks and protected areas in Africa and Latin America. The National Parks we support are large wilderness areas with high levels of biodiversity, are largely unknown or forgotten, and suffer inadequate support to ensure their long-term protection. The foundation partners with other conservation organizations to assist with the implementation of various technologies and capabilities to enhance wildlife protection and monitoring, protected area management and surveillance. In June 2017 the foundation signed a 15-year public-private partnership with the Congolese Institute for Nature Conservation (ICCN) for the rehabilitation and management of the Upemba & Kundelungu National Parks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Join us as we rehabilitate two National Parks in the Democratic Republic of Congo by subscribing to our Upemba & Kundelungu monthly newsletter! http://forgottenparksfoundation.us14.list-manage.com/subscribe?u=f6667e2609b54cbfc14b50b2f&id=2d73b761a6

  • "Mabwe is one of the key conservation areas of Upemba National Park (UNP), it is where we have the last remaining pure savanna elephants of DRC. The fact that we still have armed groups seeking refuge and resources in protected areas is and remains a real issue."

"Yes, we can build a better base, with better protection, we can have a ‘fortress’ to protect the lives of our rangers, but for how long?" - Christine (Tina) Lain Read the full tribute through the link below.

________________ On this International Zebra Day, we would like to celebrate the growth of the zebra population at the Upemba National Park. As the only wild zebras left in the DRC, their protection is central to maintaining the biodiversity of the country. Happy International Zebra Day!

Plus sur eux dans notre dernière édition 2023 d’Upemba Post via ce lien : https://shorturl.at/elpsw ______________________________ We started the year on a high-note with new appointees who joined our Upemba Family from December 2023. The UNP is glad to welcome, once again, Director Innocent Mburanumwe who will be serving as Deputy Site Manager, and Conservator Ariana Lado Sylvain who will be leading the Anti-Poaching Unit. #FactFriday | Beyond biodiversity, the cultural wealth of Upemba stems from the fact that the park is stretched on three administrative provinces inhabiting communities with rich traditions and lomg standing cultural practices. Administratively, the provinces are Haut-Katanga, Lualaba, and Haut-Lomami. In these provinces, the park touches the following territories; Mitwaba (for Haut-Katanga), Lubudi (for Lualaba), Bukama and Malemba (for Haut-Lomami). Traditionally, within these territories, the park touches some chiefdoms namely Kyona Ngoie (in Mitwaba), Bayeke Mulumbu (in Lubudi), Batumba and Kikonja (in Bukama), and Kayumba (in Malemba). Plus sous ce lien: https://lnkd.in/enTd27CJ ___________________ #FactFriday | In 2017, the Lufira Bassin, from Kyubo Falls to the junction with the Congo River at Kitembo, was designated a Ramsar wetland, one of four sites with Ramsar site status in the DRC. Ramsar sites in the DRC play a vital role in the conservation of rare and endangered flora and fauna of their regions. These are some of the last remaining sites in the country where human intervention and exploitation of natural resources should not be allowed. More under this link: https://lnkd.in/enTd27CJ
