🌡️☀️ Last week, the Washington metro region experienced a dangerous heat wave. But even in extreme weather, our drivers are on the road six days a week delivering medically tailored meals and groceries to neighbors in need. Food & Friends' delivery team covers a region spanning 6,172 square miles from Hagerstown, MD to Fredericksburg, VA–a total area about the size of Connecticut. These volunteer and staff drivers are also critical links to the community for neighbors dealing with social isolation and serious illnesses. Food & Friends is grateful for the swift advancement of the American Medical Innovation and Investment Act (H.R. 8816) through the U.S. House Committee on Ways & Means. This important legislation contains an updated version of the Medically Tailored Home-Delivered Meals Demonstration Pilot Act. FIMC is so appreciative of the speedy consideration and advancement of H.R. 8816, the American Medical Innovation and Investment Act, which contains an updated version of H.R. 6780, the Medically Tailored Home-Delivered Meals Demonstration Pilot Act, by the Committee today. By quickly advancing H.R. 8816 to the floor of the House of Representatives with an affirmative vote, the Committee on Ways & Means has already taken a critical step to expand access to Medially Tailored Meals (MTMs), bend the health care cost curve, and provide medically vulnerable seniors with healthy and delicious medically tailored meals in their homes. ✅FIMC urges a speedy passage of H.R. 8816 to advance equitable access to this lifesaving intervention!

Our SAIC celebration of LGBTQ+ pride month continued with a morning of giving back to our National Capital Region community. Food & Friends got their start providing meals and companionship to people suffering from HIV and AIDS at the beginning of the crisis. Today they serve over 6000 home bound members of the community suffering from a variety of debilitating conditions. Thank you to my SAIC counterparts who gave up their morning to contribute to this amazing organization. Food & Friends was excited to welcome Dr. Andrew Bremer, Director of the Office of Nutrition Research at The National Institutes of Health, and his colleagues Samantha Adas, MS, RDN and Krista Zanetti, to tour our facility and meet our staff last week. Dr. Bremer is a powerful advocate of Food is Medicine and has made it one of the top priorities at the Office of Nutrition Research.   Dr. Bremer met with Chief Program Officer Leslye E. Wooley, Nutrition Services Director Rebecca Kahn, Executive Chef Rasheed Abdurrahman, and Government Relations and Public Funding Director Casey Dyson to learn more about Food & Friends’ essential services. #foodismedicine
