Looking to beat the summer heat? Take a dip in this community pool beautified by an elaborate #masstimber roof structure. Completed in 2023, The Rogue X Community Complex is a hybrid structure that looked to incorporate timber elements into the pool's design. The result is a stunning glow of local Douglas Fir that allows patrons to experience natural beauty and unique characteristics of mass timber typically not seen in this application. Timberlab provided mass timber fabrication and installation services for Rogue X with product provided by Kalesnikoff. The design underwent three iterations to achieve its final form. The initial iteration used CLT over glulam trusses. However, further refinements were made in the second iteration, where a hybrid truss design was implemented, incorporating bridge cables as tension strands. High-strength steel rods replaced the bridge cables in the final design iteration, allowing for a more efficient construction process. FLOR Projects work with Timberlab featured on National CBS News this morning. 🌞
What does the future of construction look like? The future is now - and the answer is mass timber. Jeff Glor from CBS News recently sat down with Timberlab's President, Christopher Evans, and Port of Portland's Executive Director Curtis Robinhold, to discuss the technical innovation and regional timber sourcing that went into the new Portland International Airport. "Walking into Portland, Oregon's new airport is like seeing a version of the future - firmly rooted in the past." Looking up at the new timber roof, we can identify which forests each of the timber components came from. It is the first time this type of wood sourcing and tracking has been done, especially on a project of this magnitude. "American forests are producing more timber than we're consuming. We're subscribing to sustainable forestry practices that are in alignment with long-term forest health." Sustainable Northwest and ZGF Architects played an integral role in helping achieve this sustainable sourcing story at the airport. Working with this team, Timberlab was able to cut and install over 20,000 unique pieces of timber. When comparing mass timber to concrete and steel construction, opting for timber can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 20 percent. A single tree can store over half of its weight in carbon. When considering the manufacturing process, timber products use far less carbon emissions than either steel or concrete. Experts in the industry have been able to prove repeatedly that mass timber construction is not only better for reducing carbon in our built environment, but also offers superiority in seismic performance, construction speeds, and fire resistance. We're excited to be supporting the push for this construction type nationally. We anticipate that mass timber will continue to grow and that more developers, designers, and builders will continue to adopt this building methodology for its growing array of benefits. To see this work gain national media coverage is a good signal that this industry is on the right track and that people are paying attention to #masstimber. A huge shoutout to FLOR Projects (Nicholas Kielbasa) for capturing the natural beauty and technical details of many of our mass timber buildings! A significant portion of their portfolio was featured in this CBS segment. At 284 feet, Ascent lives up to its name. The towering 25-story apartment building is the world's tallest hybrid #masstimber + concrete structure, with 19 stories and 273,000 square feet of mass timber providing 260 residential units to the Milwaukee market. Timberlab was brought on as the trade partner and was responsible for procuring and managing the delivery of the building's timber elements. The project yielded significant schedule savings through our detailed prefabrication and coordination expertise. Additionally, Timberlab facilitated the testing of glulam columns to receive a 3-hour fire resistance. Ascent is truly a ground-breaking project. It's an excellent application of mass timber and serves as a blueprint for tall timber everywhere. We anticipate more hybrid structures like Ascent as the market demand for low-carbon and higher-density structures increases. Ascent received the 2023 Structure Award from the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH). Learn more about Ascent: https://lnkd.in/gxJgYSby New Land Enterprises | C.D.
