Watch or listen to the new episode of the EPRI Current,  The Science Behind the Buzz: 2024 BioBlitz.  Learn more about how citizen scientists play an important role in wildlife observation and conservation efforts no matter what the species. As part of EPRI’s annual Pollinator Power Party, the BioBlitz invites anyone who is interested in building their wildlife observational skills to record pollinators in their areas and become part of a global contributing community. Researchers verify observations so we all can better understand species distribution and trends. Join host Samantha Gilman and EPRI’s Jessica Fox, a conservation biologist, as they discuss the BioBlitz, how to participate, and more about the iNaturalist platform used in this and many other observation events. Plus, learn how pollinators play a part in the clean energy transition and how energy companies can support pollinator habitat. Listen here:https://lnkd.in/gzRHvrDx

Today's #climate and weather are becoming more extreme. The energy system is under continual pressure to improve #resiliency, #reliability, and flexibility during extreme weather and other events. These pressures present unique challenges that can impact customers. Hurricane Beryl, which left destruction behind in parts of the Caribbean, was the first Category 5 storm ever seen in the Atlantic Ocean in June. EPRI and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory conducted a study to look at how climate change could affect the risk of hurricane-induced power outages. The study's findings were featured in today's The New York Times. In the article, EPRI's Andrea Staid said utility companies along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts pay close attention to hurricanes. The analysis could help energy companies plan future improvements. "It motivates them even more because it shows what can happen if we don't adapt, if we don't take climate considerations into account when planning our energy system," said Staid. The energy transition demands the integration of distributed resources, customer energy use, and community energy management with electric power system planning and operation. This requires seamless coordination across diverse energy sectors like gas, water, heat, and transport. Collaboration among stakeholders is key, spanning organizations and technologies. Innovation must navigate the challenge of interoperability with legacy grid components, ensuring new solutions integrate smoothly with older technologies. EPRI’s Technology Innovation team has prepared this report which takes a closer look at tomorrow’s energy future needs. https://lnkd.in/eT65W_QM #EnergyTransition #Collaboration #Innovation

“EPRI is working with future fusion owner/operators to help understand and define criteria and metrics a #fusiontechnology might need to hit before adoption. These efforts hope to help align technology attributes with customer needs to help accelerate the technology’s development and then eventual adoption.” Diana Grandas shared information about EPRI’s work in fusion energy with participants at the recent White House Summit: Marking Two Years of the Bold Decadal Vision for Commercial Fusion. During the event, Diana also discussed how electric utilities and other future fusion owner/operators and end users may be viewing fusion right now. A recording of the event is available here with the panel that Diana is on starting at 1 hour 15 minutes: https://lnkd.in/eV8Yb2wi #fusion #energy
