Honoring pioneers in science and medicine like Rosalind Franklin, Mary Eliza Mahoney, and Clara Barton, the artwork reflects their enduring contributions. The University of Southern Maine McGoldrick Center for Career & Student Success and Portland Commons Residence Hall has won an AIA Maine Design Award of Merit in the Institutional/Commercial category and a Design Award of Merit from SARA NY! These two new linked buildings transformed the University of Southern Maine’s Portland commuter campus into a welcoming residential community. The new buildings and landscape enhance social equity, drive economic prosperity, and promote environmental stewardship through The Passive House Network design. Together, they include 580 new beds, a new green quad, a dining common, career services and student affairs offices, meeting rooms, lounges and a new university store. We are thrilled to announce that Hood Bike Park has won a prestigious SARA NY Design Award of Excellence! Situated in Charlestown's industrial area, surrounded by highways, railways, and industrial sites, this 22,000 square-foot pavilion and park space has become a focal point for the Hood Park development. It offers bicycle facilities, public restrooms, showers, lockers, and lush green spaces. The 'perch' features a canopy of trees and outdoor seating, with an accessible ramp connecting the perch to the lawn, which can be used as an amphitheater with the historic Hood smoke stack as a backdrop. Sustainability is a priority, with soil and water quality improvements, rainwater capture, and local plantings.
