In the United States, architecture evolved as a highly organized profession when a group of prominent architects, including Richard Morris Hunt, launched the AIA (American Institute of Architects). On February 23, 1857, 13 architects meet in Richard Upjohn’s office in Manhattan, forming what would become the American Institute of Architects (AIA) to “promote the scientific and practical perfection of its members” and “elevate the standing of the profession.” Until this point, anyone who wished to call themselves an architect -- including masons, carpenters, bricklayers, and other members of the building trade -- could do so. By the mid-1860s, architects from other cities sought to join the AIA. Members decided that chapters would be formed in cities across America and make their original group the first official local chapter. The need for a professional organization of architects in Utah coincided with a state-imposed registration procedure for the profession. The earliest roster of architects is dated June 1911 and consisted of a large number of well-known architect-builders and architects. The majority came from Salt Lake City; however, a number also represented such cities as Provo, Logan, and Ogden. The earliest professional organization - the "Utah Association of Architects" - was established in 1911. In 1919 the professional community was invited to the "Institute of Utah Architects." It is unclear whether this was simply a renaming of the earlier organization or a new professional group. In 1921, Utah received its charter for the Utah Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. The chapter's territory included all of Utah as well as 32 counties of Idaho. Fast forward to 2024 and for the first time in its 103-year history, the Utah Chapter has a fully female executive leadership team. #ArchitectureWeek #AIAUtah #history 📸 CRSA Architecture

Tropical Architecture Reimagined: Embracing the unique subtropical and tropical climate of Queensland, architects are redefining tropical architecture. Their designs use natural ventilation, shading, and rainwater harvesting, ensuring that spaces are not only visually stunning but also comfortable and functional year-round. 3. Indigenous Design and Inclusivity: There is a growing awareness and appreciation of Indigenous culture in architectural projects. Architects are collaborating closely with Indigenous communities to create spaces that honour their heritage and values. This inclusive approach to design is fostering cultural respect and diversity in the industry. 4. Urban Revitalisation and Adaptive Reuse: Queensland's cities are evolving, and architects are at the forefront of urban revitalisation efforts. The adaptive reuse of historic buildings, mixed-use developments, and the creation of vibrant public spaces are revitalising urban areas and preserving architectural heritage. 5. Community Engagement: Architects are actively engaging with the community to better understand their needs and aspirations. Public participation is shaping the design process and leading to more community-centric spaces that enhance the quality of life for residents. I must admit a liking for stolid, somewhat Presbyterian, modern architecture.   I am thinking of the type of buildings that present a somewhat dour countenance to the world, as if to say, that with the simplest of ingredients, say fired clay and coagulated mud, that this is all I can offer to you, and moreover, this is all you have a right to expect.   I guess therefore I am musing on a sense of humility I desire to see, that recognises the central part buildings and architecture play within the human story, but also their inevitable scenographic role too, as mere background to life.   It’s a rare case I think that one can point to the design of a building changing anyone’s life, apart from those who chose to become architects of course.   But generally, I hope you would agree, that the formidable power of the art of architecture, is in creating a continuous frieze of form, that we play, like unwilling actors in our own life, against.   Calls to admonish the banality of most architecture are therefore misplaced and ill thought through I think unless one’s interest is principally in baubles.   It is with such thoughts in mind that I recently visited Witherford Watson Mann architects, Almshouse building in Southwark, London, that seems to coalesce such thoughts within its very maw.

Seems to me the construction industry, and all its potential tributaries, should be quite busy in the coming year if every project I see, whether active or potential. evolves. I walk the city daily, and I see so many sites where it is obvious there is bundling going on that will develop into projects large and small, or large swaths of razed areas that are actively being recreated. I hope some of this will become affordable housing. Much is in more residential areas, for sure, although Manhattan tends to have more of a contiguous mix than some other cities which keeps it vibrant during most hours of the day. All in all, I'd say the premise of this article is not quite what reality denotes. Although to make way for the new, it's sad to see disappear some of the older architecture that lends integrity and history to our great city, I want to mention that the architectural design has been really commendable and attractive for many of the new bldgs already showing their faces, so keep up the good (green!) work architects, designers, developers! #constructionindustry #newdevelopment #buildingforthefuture #buildingindustry #nycconstruction #nycrealestate #architecture #architectureinspiration #architectureanddesign https://lnkd.in/eHhd3Ut8

H2M’s Senior Vice President and Director of Private Sector Architecture, Kevin Paul, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, CFM, recently offered his insights to Long Island Business News for an article on how architects overcome the design challenges posed by climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic through creativity and innovation. These challenges include designing structures that address future climate and weather events, which are often unprecedented and unpredictable. For example, buildings may have to be designed with flooding resiliency in mind, even in areas that have not typically been subject to heavy floodwaters in the past. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way interior spaces are designed, pushing architects to be more creative about how they address public health concerns without disrupting the open flow of spaces that are often limited in their square footage.
